I visited TEFAF New York, another major event during New York Art Fair Week.
This was my second time attending, and it was just as satisfying as before. Back when I was in Korea, I only knew about Frieze or The Armory Show. But after moving to New York and experiencing TEFAF, it instantly became my number one favorite art fair. While it's slightly smaller in scale than Frieze, I found it much more engaging with so much more to see and enjoy.
If Frieze is all about "hip and trendy contemporary art," TEFAF can be described as a "museum-quality fair with a high-end, aristocratic vibe," featuring works by various legendary masters. It truly showcases masterpieces that you would typically only see in major museums. Originating in Maastricht, Netherlands in 1988, this year marks TEFAF's 10th anniversary since expanding to New York.
I heard that a committee of dozens of experts—including scholars and conservation scientists—vets the authenticity and condition of every artwork with extreme strictness right before the fair, meaning anything fake or subpar cannot even set foot in the venue. It’s a true feast for the eyes, where you can see everything from antiquities to modern masters all in one place. On top of fine art, the fair also offers a diverse lineup that includes high-end furniture and jewelry.

TEFAF New York, located in the world’s most prestigious and vibrant art market, New York City, brings together internationally renowned dealers to showcase their work in the historic Park Avenue Armory, a prime Manhattan location. Featuring over 90 prestigious international galleries, TEFAF New York offers the best in modern and contemporary art, design, jewelry, and ancient art.
The fair remains the only art fair at the Park Avenue Armory to activate the 16 historic period rooms across the first and second floors with transformative exhibitor presentations. The Reception Rooms on the first floor and the Company Rooms on the second floor were designed by the most prominent designers and artists of the 19th century, including Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Herter Brothers, Pottier & Stymus, and others.
TEFAF’s Creative Spaces initiative presents large-scale works located throughout the fair, offering exhibitors a unique opportunity to display works outside of their stands. These works create additional opportunities for discovery, pushing the boundaries of scale and concept, and bringing an added dimension to the fair experience.
TEFAF New York additionally offers a rich lineup of programming that connects collectors and visitors with leading experts from the TEFAF global art community. The in-person talks program aims to foster conversations between some of the world’s most illustrious minds, covering industry insights and inspiring new and experienced art collectors and lovers.

세계에서 가장 권위 있고 활기찬 미술 시장인 뉴욕시에 위치한 테파프 뉴욕(TEFAF New York)은 세계적인 명성을 가진 딜러들을 한데 모아, 맨해튼의 중심지이자 역사적인 장소인 '파크 애비뉴 아모리(Park Avenue Armory)'에서 전시를 선보입니다. 90개 이상의 일류 글로벌 갤러리들이 참여하는 테파프 뉴욕은 최고 수준의 근현대 미술, 디자인, 주얼리, 그리고 고미술을 아우르는 최상의 컬렉션을 제공합니다.
본 페어는 파크 애비뉴 아모리의 1층과 2층에 걸친 16개의 역사적인 시대별 방(Period rooms)을 전시장으로 전면 활성화하여, 참가사들의 혁신적인 프레젠테이션을 담아내는 유일한 아트페어입니다. 1층의 리셉션 룸(Reception Rooms)과 2층의 컴퍼니 룸(Company Rooms)은 루이스 컴포트 티파니(Louis Comfort Tiffany), 스탠포드 화이트(Stanford White), 허터 브라더스(Herter Brothers), 포티에 앤 스티무스(Pottier & Stymus) 등 19세기를 대표하는 가장 저명한 디자이너와 예술가들에 의해 설계되었습니다.
테파프의 '크리에이티브 스페이스(Creative Spaces)' 프로젝트는 페어 전역에 대형 작품들을 선보이며, 참가 갤러리들이 부스 외의 공간에서도 작품을 전시할 수 있는 특별한 기회를 제공합니다. 이 작품들은 관람객들에게 또 다른 발견의 즐거움을 선사하며, 규모와 개념의 경계를 확장하고 아트페어 경험에 새로운 차원의 깊이를 더해줍니다.
아울러 테파프 뉴욕은 컬렉터 및 관람객들을 테파프 글로벌 아트 커뮤니티의 선두 전문가들과 연결해 주는 풍성한 프로그램을 제공합니다. 현장에서 진행되는 토크 프로그램은 세계에서 가장 저명한 석학 및 전문가들 간의 대화를 도모하며, 미술계의 심도 있는 인사이트를 다루는 동시에 신진 및 기성 컬렉터들과 미술 애호가들 모두에게 새로운 영감을 선사하는 것을 목표로 합니다.
이번 TEFAF New York 에서 인상적이었던 점 중 하나는 대형 갤러리들이 여러 작가를 섞기보다 한 작가 중심의 단독 부스를 많이 선보였다는 점이었어요. 개인적으로도 그런 구성이 작품의 분위기와 작가의 세계관을 더 집중해서 볼 수 있어서 선호하는 편인데요, 그래서 더 관람하기 좋았던것 같아요. 이번 1편에서는 주로 대형 갤러리들과 인상적이었던 주요 부스들을 중심으로 정리해보았어요. 사진이 낳은 관계로 2편으로 찾아올게요. 감사합니다.
One of the most interesting aspects of this year’s TEFAF New York was how many major galleries chose to present focused solo booths rather than densely mixed presentations. I personally enjoyed that approach — it allowed each artist’s work to feel more immersive and intentional within the fair environment. In this first part, I mainly focused on larger galleries and some of the strongest booth presentations throughout the fair.
