I recently visited Lisa Yuskavage's exhibition at David Zwirner. Although I had seen her work many times in photos as she is a highly celebrated artist, this was my very first time experiencing her actual paintings in person. I visited on the opening day, and it was so incredibly crowded that it was quite a challenge to take photos. Since she is considered one of the top blue-chip artists represented by the gallery, the excitement and energy in the air were even more intense.
The artist is famous for subtly blending uncomfortable truths and feminism within a vibrant, brilliant color palette. True to her style, this exhibition also evoked a strangely uncomfortable emotion hidden beneath the colorful paintings. It is a grand-scale solo exhibition showcasing a wide variety of techniques and sizes, including not only paintings but also drawings and collages.

사진으로는 많이 본 워낙 유명한 작가의 작업이었는데요 실제 작품을 보는건 처음이었어요. 오프닝날 다녀왔는데 사람들이 어찌나 많던지 사진 정말 어렵게 찍어왔어요. 소속 작가중에서도 블루칩 작가로 손에꼽을 수 있는 작가이기에 그 열기가 더욱 뜨거웠어요.
작가는 화려한 컬러감속에 불편한 진실과 페미니즘을 절묘하게 섞은 작품들로 유명하구요 이번 전시에서도 역시나 컬러풀한 페인팅들속에 묘하게 불편한 감정들을 느낄 수 있었어요. 페인팅 뿐만 아니라 드로잉, 콜라주등 다양한 기법과 사이즈들의 작품들이 보여진 대형 개인전이에요.
David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of works by American artist Lisa Yuskavage, on view at the gallery’s 533 West 19th Street location in New York. The exhibition features new and recent paintings and works on paper, and introduces a body of collages—a new medium for the artist. This is Yuskavage’s tenth solo exhibition with David Zwirner and marks twenty years since her first show with the gallery in 2006. A new monograph of Yuskavage’s work was just published as part of Phaidon’s Contemporary Artists Series, with texts by Barry Schwabsky, Ariel Levy, and Lena Dunham.
데이비드 즈위너(David Zwirner) 갤러리는 뉴욕 웨스트 19번가 533번지 공간에서 미국 작가 리사 유스카바지(Lisa Yuskavage)의 전시를 개최하게 되어 기쁘게 생각합니다. 이번 전시에서는 작가의 신작 및 최근 회화, 종이 작업(드로잉)을 선보이며, 특히 작가가 새롭게 시도한 매체인 콜라주 작품들을 최초로 공개합니다. 이번 전시는 유스카바지가 데이비드 즈위너 갤러리에서 열리는 열 번째 개인전이며, 2006년 이 갤러리에서 가졌던 첫 전시 이후 20주년을 맞이하는 뜻깊은 자리입니다. 아울러 파이돈(Phaidon) 출판사의 '현대 미술가 시리즈(Contemporary Artists Series)'의 일환으로 배리 슈왑스키, 아리엘 레비, 레나 던햄의 글이 수록된 유스카바지의 새로운 작품집(도록)이 최근 출간되었습니다.

This exhibition marks a significant development in Yuskavage’s practice while synthesizing the themes that have shaped her oeuvre since the beginning. Although many of the paintings and drawings appear to unfold within a studio setting, they are more accurately located in the mind of the artist, becoming imaginative gatherings where time warps and folds back on itself, collapsing spatial and temporal boundaries.
이번 전시는 유스카바지가 초창기부터 발전시켜 온 예술적 주제들을 하나로 집대성하는 동시에, 그의 작품 세계에서 매우 중요한 진전을 보여주는 자리입니다. 많은 회화와 드로잉 작품들이 마치 작업실(스튜디오) 공간 안에서 펼쳐지는 것처럼 보이지만, 사실 작가의 마음속 공간이라고 표현하는 것이 더 정확합니다. 이 공간들은 시간과 공간의 경계를 허물며 시간이 뒤틀리고 스스로 겹쳐지는 상상 속의 모임이 됩니다.
“I keep on thinking about the way in which your memories – and the way you flip through remembering things – are forms of discarded masterpieces. There are these rectangular forms in the picture, some of which have things rendered on them ... and then there’s this tumbling bunch of color-field-flat-things – paintings, we assume. And I was just thinking that it’s almost like going through your own history, and there’s some things that you discarded, and that you want to bring back.”

“나는 우리가 가진 기억들, 그리고 그 기억들을 머릿속으로 휙휙 넘겨보는 방식 자체가 일종의 ‘버려진 걸작들’의 형태가 아닐까 계속 생각하게 돼요. 그림 속에는 몇몇 직사각형 형태들이 있고, 그중 일부에는 무언가가 그려져 있죠… 그리고 그 옆에는 마치 색면회화처럼 평면적인 것들이 무더기로 쏟아져 내리고 있는데, 우리는 그것을 그림일 거라고 짐작하죠. 저는 그 모습을 보며 마치 자기 자신의 지나온 역사를 훑어보는 것 같다는 생각을 했어요. 그 역사 속에는 내가 스스로 버렸던 것들도 있고, 다시금 꺼내어 되살리고 싶은 것들도 있는 법이니까요.”

Although widely recognized as a figurative painter, Yuskavage has long engaged with the legacy of color field painting—an influence that becomes particularly evident in the present exhibition. In a new development in her practice, she introduces trompe-l’oeil devices to arrive at a comparable emphasis on abstraction, mobilizing illusion precisely to emphasize through contrast the inherent flatness of the works.
유스카바지는 구상 화가로 널리 알려져 있지만, 오랫동안 색면회화(color field painting)의 유산을 탐구해 왔으며 이러한 영향은 이번 전시에서 특히 두드러지게 나타납니다. 그녀는 자신의 작업 세계에서 나타난 새로운 발전으로서, 추상성을 이와 대등하게 강조하기 위해 '트롬프뢰유(trompe-l’oeil, 눈속임 착시 기법)' 장치를 도입했습니다. 이는 환영(착시)을 정교하게 동원함으로써, 오히려 그와 대조를 통해 작품이 본질적으로 지닌 평면성을 강조하기 위함입니다.
In this sense, mimesis becomes paradoxically more abstract than abstraction itself, recalling an early modernist moment before abstraction and figuration hardened into opposing categories—when a painted figure could function simultaneously as representation and as purely pictorial event.
이러한 관점에서 보면, 모방(재현)은 역설적으로 추상 그 자체보다 훨씬 더 추상적인 것이 됩니다. 이는 추상과 구상이 서로 대립하는 범주로 고착되기 전인 초기 모더니즘 시기를 떠올리게 합니다. 당시에는 그림 속 인물이 무언가를 나타내는 '재현'의 역할을 하는 동시에, 순수한 '회화적 사건'으로도 완벽하게 기능할 수 있었습니다.
Seeing Lisa Yuskavage's work in person was even better than I expected. Her unique artistic world unfolded through a brilliant color palette that contained heavy themes and her fantastic, dreamlike imagination. I was particularly impressed by the way sharp colors and traditional painting techniques, reminiscent of Renaissance and Baroque art, highlighted her ideas. For artists with long careers, their work inevitably changes, and it was nice to see her progress in a positive direction, maintaining her signature style while making non-radical evolutions.
실제로 본 작가의 작업은 생각보다 훨씬 더 좋았어요. 화려한 컬러감안에 내포되어있는 묵직한 주제들과 환상적 몽환적인 작가의 상상이 더해져 정말로 독특한 작가만의 작품세계가 펼쳐지고 있었어요. 특히나 선명한 컬러들과 르네상스 바로크 회화에서 볼법한 전통회화 기법들이 더욱 작가의 아이디어를 e돋보이게 해주는 방식으로 드러나고 있는점이 인상적이었어요. 작품을 오랫동안 해 온 작가들의 경우 작업은 어떤식으로든 변화하기 마련인데, 작가는 급진적이진 않지만 작가의 색을 잘 유지하면서 발전적인 방향으로 나아가는것도 반갑게 느껴졌어요.
