안녕하세요. 하우저앤워스 츄 샤오페이 전시 다녀왔어요.
한국에서는 이미 여러차례 전시를 한적이 있는 작가였더라구요. 저는 이번에 처음 본 작가였는데, 개인의 기억을 몽환적으로 표현해낸 스타일이 정말 인상적이었어요. 지난 작업들을 보니 작가의 화풍이 많이 바뀐거 같은데요, 갈수록 더 발전해나가는 스타일 또한 인상적이었어요.
초기 작업에서는 자신의 기억이나 어린 시절 물건들을 극사실적으로 묘사하는 데 집중했어요. 약간은 향수에 젖은 서정적인 느낌이 강했죠. 현재 작업에서는 이번 전시에서 보이듯, 이제는 단순히 '그리는 기술'을 넘어 공간을 왜곡하고 철학적인 서사를 입히는 힘이 생겼어요. 아버지가 무대 디자이너였던 내력을 회화적인 '무대 구성'으로 승화시키면서, 그림이 훨씬 더 입체적이고 단단해진 느낌이었어요. 앞으로가 더욱 기대되는 작가였어요.
I visited Qiu Xiaofei’s exhibition at Hauser & Wirth. I learned that he is an artist who has already exhibited several times in Korea. Although this was my first time encountering his work, I was deeply impressed by his style of expressing personal memories in such a dreamlike way. Looking at his past works, it seems his painting style has changed significantly over time, and seeing how he continues to evolve and develop was truly remarkable.
In his early works, he focused on hyper-realistically depicting his own memories or objects from his childhood, which carried a strong, lyrical sense of nostalgia. In his current work, as seen in this exhibition, he has moved beyond mere painting technique to develop the power to distort space and weave in philosophical narratives. By sublimating his family background—his father was a set designer—into a painterly "stage composition," his paintings now feel much more three-dimensional and solid. He is certainly an artist whose future I look forward to even more.

하우저앤워스(Hauser & Wirth)는 츄 샤오페이가 아버님을 여읜 후 발견한, 그간 알지 못했던 가족 사진들에서 영감을 받아 제작한 새로운 회화와 종이 작업들을 선보입니다. '시들고 번성하는 극장(The Theater of Wither and Thrive)'이라는 전시 제목을 통해, 츄 샤오페이는 세상의 끊임없는 진화와 그 예측 불가능한 과정이 개인적 기억의 미묘하고 포착하기 어려운 형성과 어떻게 맞물리는지를 고찰합니다.
그의 작업은 중국의 문화적, 철학적 전통뿐만 아니라 시인 로버트 로웰과 에밀리 딕슨의 영향 아래 이러한 현상들에 형상을 부여합니다. 향수, 상실, 경이로움은 삶이라는 거대한 극장을 암시하는 구도로 응축됩니다. 존재와 부재, 번영과 쇠퇴, 거대한 역사와 개인의 감정은 인간 경험이라는 조수 같은 드라마 속에서 소용돌이칩니다.
작가가 돌아가신 아버지의 유품 속에서 발견한 가족 사진들은 이번 신작들의 심리적 동력이 되었습니다. 시간이 흐르며 빛바래고 산화된 은염 필름 속에 담긴 사랑과 상실의 이야기들은 삶의 순환에 대한 작가의 더 넓은 성찰을 촉발했습니다. 전시 제목인 '시들고 번성하는 극장'은 이 순환에 내재된 드라마를 포착하며, 작가 가족의 연극적 인연을 참조합니다. 그의 조부모님은 전설적인 베이징 극단인 영풍사(Yongfeng Society)의 연출가였고, 아버지는 그곳의 화가이자 무대 디자이너였습니다. 갤러리 입구에서 관람객을 맞이하며 전시의 이름이기도 한 붉은 숲 그림을 포함해, 이번 전시의 많은 작품은 치우 샤오페이의 어린 시절에 익숙했던 연극 배경의 평면성을 떠올리게 하는 왜곡된 지면과 스케일을 활용합니다.
작가의 고향인 중국의 자연적, 건축적 요소들은 친척들의 얼굴, 그리고 초현실적인 인형 괴물들과 뒤섞여 회화와 종이 작업 전반에 걸쳐 환상적인 장면을 형성합니다. 작품 곳곳에 반복적으로 등장하는 꽃과 떨어진 꽃잎들은 생태학적 재생이 죽음의 자연스러운 결과이며, 상실이 성장을 낳는다는 사실을 상기시킵니다. 갤러리 뒷벽을 따라 전시된 네 점의 대형 회화에서 츄 샤오페이는 사계절의 흐름을 통해 영원한 지상의 이야기와 감정의 서사를 탐구하며, 자연계의 순환적 변화를 인간의 경험과 연결합니다.
Qiu Xiaofei presents new paintings and works on paper inspired by his discovery of previously unknown family photographs—a cache of images uncovered after the death of the artist’s father. With ‘The Theater of Wither and Thrive,’ Qiu considers the ceaseless evolution of the world and the ways in which that unpredictable process intersects with the subtle and elusive formation of personal memory.
His work gives shape to these phenomena, drawing on Chinese cultural and philosophical traditions, as well as the influence of poets Robert Lowell and Emily Dickinson. Nostalgia, loss and wonder are distilled into compositions that suggest the vastness of the theater of life: presence and absence, prosperity and decline, grand histories and individual emotions gyre in the tidal dramas of human experience.
The family photographs Qiu found among his late father’s belongings form the psychological engine of this new body of work. The stories of love and loss captured in heretofore undeveloped rolls of silver-halide film, peeling and oxidized from the passage of time, set in motion the artist’s broader consideration of the cycle of life. The exhibition’s title, ‘The Theater of Wither and Thrive,’ captures the drama inherent in this cycle, and references Qiu’s familial connections to the stage: his grandparents were directors of the Yongfeng Society, the legendary Beijing theater troupe where his father was a painter and set designer. Many of the works on view at Hauser & Wirth—including the painting of a dense red forest that greets visitors entering the gallery and is the exhibition’s namesake—make use of a distorted ground and scale to evoke the flatness of the theater backdrops so familiar to Qiu’s childhood.
Natural and architectural elements of the artist’s hometown in China intertwine with visages of both relatives and otherworldly humanoid monsters, forming hallucinatory scenes across the paintings and works on paper. Flowers and fallen petals recur throughout the works, reminders that ecological renewal is a natural consequence of death, that loss gives rise to growth. In four large-scale paintings along the gallery’s back wall, Qiu explores that eternal terrestrial and emotional story through the passage of the four seasons, connecting cyclical transformations from the natural world with the human experience.

아버지가 남긴 오래된 필름 속 기억을 한 편의 연극 무대처럼 재구성한 츄 샤오페이의 신작들은 상실이 어떻게 새로운 창조의 씨앗이 되는지를 아름답게 보여주었어요. 캔버스 위에 겹겹이 쌓인 색채와 기묘한 형상들을 마주하며, 저 또한 잊고 있었던 개인적인 기억의 조각들을 하나둘 꺼내어 보게 된 시간이었구요. 단순히 보기 좋은 그림을 넘어 삶의 순환과 철학을 담아내는 그의 예술적 성장이 저에게도 깊은 울림을 주었어요. 앞으로가 더 기대되는 작가였어요. 감사합니다.
Qiu Xiaofei’s new works, which reconstruct the memories found in his father’s old film rolls like a theatrical stage, beautifully demonstrated how loss can become the seed for new creation. Facing the layers of color and mysterious forms on his canvases, it was a time for me to also bring out forgotten fragments of my own personal memories one by one. His artistic evolution, which goes beyond mere aesthetics to embrace the cycles of life and philosophy, left a profound resonance with me. He is an artist whose future I look forward to even more.
