안녕하세요. 휘트니 비엔날레 다녀왔어요.

저는 이번이 세번째 관람이었구요. 워낙 유명한 행사라 빠지지않고 가고는 있지만, 뭐 리뷰는 그닥 좋은편은 아닌경우도 좀 있어요. 그래도 오랜 준비를 거쳐 나온 전시이니만큼 즐거운 마음으로 재미있게 보고왔어요. 2년안에 수십명의 작가를 발굴해서 기획하는게 정말 어려운일이고, 기간도 정말 짧게 느껴질것만 같아요. 새로운 테크놀로지를 활용한 작품이 흥미로웠구요, 전통 페인팅 평면작가 3명정도 주목할만하다고 생각되는 전시였어요. 하지만 제 전공인 입체나 설치에서는 이렇다할 흥미로운 작가를 발견하지는 못했어요. 

지난번엔 마음에 들었던 작가 딱 한명, 마자 루즈닉이었는데요. 이번엔 그래도 세명이라 더 많은곳에서 볼수 있기를 기대해 볼게요. 첫번째는 일본출신 작가 아키라 이케조 AKIRA IKEZOE 에요. 뉴욕에서 활동중인 작가구요 주변의 사물, 인물등을 본인만의 방식으로 해석해서 그리는 작업을 다양한 방식으로 하고있어요. 두번째는 이란 출신의 작가 캄루즈 아람 KAMROOZ ARAM 으로 뉴욕에서 작업하는 작가에요. 이미 알렉산더 그레이 갤러리에서 개인전을 이 시기에 맞춰 하고있는데, 보고왔거든요. 그것도 곧 포스팅 올릴 예정이에요. 그리고 마지막으로 핀리핀계 작가 자스민 시안 JASMIN SIAN 이에요. 이 작가는 평면이긴한데 페인팅은 아니고 주로 포장용지등을 사용한 펀칭기법을 사용해 섬세한 작업들을 만들어내고 있어요. 아마도 조만간 다른곳에서 전시를 보게되지 않을까 싶어요.

This was my third time attending. Since it’s such a famous event, I make sure to go every time, even though the reviews aren't always great. Still, since it’s an exhibition that comes after a long period of preparation, I went with an open mind and truly enjoyed it. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to discover and curate hundreds of artists within two years—the timeframe must feel incredibly short.

In this exhibition, I found the works utilizing new technology quite interesting, and there were about three traditional painters who I thought were particularly noteworthy. However, in my own field of sculpture and installation, I didn't find any artists who really caught my eye.

Last time, there was only one artist I truly liked, Maja Ruznic. This time, there were three, so I’m looking forward to seeing their work in more places. First is Akira Ikezoe, a Japanese artist based in New York. He interprets surrounding objects and people in his own unique style through diverse disciplines. Second is Kamrooz Aram, an Iranian artist also working in New York. He is currently having a solo exhibition at Alexander Gray Associates to coincide with the Biennial, which I’ve already visited. I’ll be posting about that soon as well. Lastly, there is Jasmin Sian, a Filipino-American artist. While her work is two-dimensional, it isn't painting; she creates delicate pieces primarily using punching techniques on materials like packaging paper. I expect to see her work in other exhibitions sometime soon.

야외 테라스에서 볼수 있었던 최신 테크놀로지 사용된 작업 동영상으로 찍어왔어요. 큐알코드로 활성화시키는 작업이였구요. 배경과 어우러지는 작업이라 정말 신기하게 느껴졌어요. 테라스에서 큐알코드에 접속하면 이런 동물/생명체가 나오는 화면이 핸드폰으로 나와요. 

I took a video of a work using the latest technology that I saw on the outdoor terrace. It was a piece activated by a QR code. It felt truly amazing because the work blended so perfectly with the background. When you scan the QR code on the terrace, these animals and creatures appear on your phone screen.

제82회 휘트니 비엔날레

제82회 휘트니 비엔날레는 이전 전시들과 마찬가지로 미국 예술의 변화하는 흐름을 깊이 들여다볼 수 있는 공간을 제공합니다. 단순히 어떤 작품이 만들어졌는지를 넘어, 무언가를 ‘미국적’이라고 부른다는 것이 오늘날 과연 어떤 의미인지 질문을 던집니다.

이번 비엔날레는 현대인의 삶에 스며들어 사람들을 하나로 묶어주는 여러 감정에 주목합니다. 이 전시는 어떤 확정적인 답을 내리기보다는, 56명의 작가와 팀들이 이어가는 대화에 함께 참여해 보라는 초대장과 같습니다. 전시는 미국 전역의 작가들뿐만 아니라 아프가니스탄에서 베트남에 이르기까지 미국의 영향력이 미치는 여러 지역 작가들의 작품도 함께 선보입니다.

작가들은 다양한 매체와 전략을 통해 생물 간의 유대, 가족 관계, 지정학적 얽힘, 기술적 친밀함, 인프라 네트워크, 위태로운 생태계, 그리고 우리가 공유하는 신화들을 탐구합니다. 이들의 작품은 서로 간의 '차이'를 통해 오히려 '함께함'을 제안합니다. 명확한 이데올로기를 선언하기보다는, 지금 이 순간을 살아나가기 위해 필요한 독특한 연대와 즉흥적인 도발, 그리고 격식에 얽매이지 않는 관계들을 보여주고 있습니다.

The eighty-second edition of the Whitney Biennial, like those before it, offers a space for contemplating the shifting currents of art in the United States, asking not only what is being made but also what it means to name something “American” at all. Attentive to the feelings that saturate contemporary life and bind people together, this Biennial is less a definitive answer than an invitation to tune in to the moods offered by an intergenerational and international group of fifty-six artists, duos, and collectives who sustain this ongoing conversation. Alongside artists from across the country, the exhibition features works by artists from places marked by the broad reach of US power, ranging from Afghanistan to Vietnam. Using a range of media and artistic strategies, they explore interspecies kinships, familial relations, geopolitical entanglements, technological affinities, infrastructural networks, precarious ecologies, and shared mythologies. As an ensemble, their works suggest togetherness through difference—avoiding clear ideological declarations in favor of the unusual alliances, improvised provocations, and irreverent associations that are required to thrive in the present moment.

This is the work of Akira Ikezoe. I personally loved his pieces so much that I couldn't help but take a lot of photos.

위에 그림이 캄루즈 아람 KAMROOZ ARAM 작업들이에요. 그래고 섹션이 정해져있어 여러점 전시되어있었어요. 

The images above are the works of Kamrooz Aram. He had his own dedicated section, so I was able to see several of his pieces on display.

거의 모두 처음보는 작가들로 이루어진 전시라 보는내내 신선한 느낌이 들었구요. 페인팅, 조각, 설치, 사진, 미디어 정말 다양한 매체가 쉴새 없이 나와서 다양하고 풍성한 전시가 되었어요. 처음엔 미국작가들을위한 행사였지만 지금은 많은 글로벌한 배경을 가진 작가들의 행사가 되어서 정말 아양한 문화와 배경을 접할수 있는 기회였어요. 아래쪽에 전체 참여작가 56명의 리스트 올려드려요.

Since the exhibition was mostly comprised of artists I was seeing for the first time, it felt very fresh throughout the entire visit. With painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and media art appearing one after another, it was a truly diverse and rich experience.  While it started as an event for American artists, it has now become a platform for artists with global backgrounds. It was a wonderful opportunity to encounter such a wide range of cultures and perspectives. I’ve included the full list of all 56 participating artists below.
