마이클 하이저는 1960년대 등장한 대지 미술 Land Art의 개척자에요. 캔버스 위에 그림을 그리는 대신, 포크레인과 다이너마이트를 들고 사막으로 나가 땅을 파고 바위를 옮겨서 작품을 만드는 분이에요. 이분의 대표작인 시티(City)라는 작업은 네바다 사막 한복판에 무려 50년 동안 거대한 고대 도시 같은 구조물을 만든 프로젝트예요. 규모가 너무 커서 비행기를 타고 가야 다 볼 수 있을 정도죠. 지금 80세가 넘으셨는데도 여전히 거대한 규모의 작업을 고집하세요. LACMA(LA 카운티 미술관) 입구에 있는 거대한 바위 작품 레비테이티드 매스(Levitated Mass)도 이분의 작품인데, 그 큰 바위를 옮기기 위해 특수 제작된 트레일러가 도시를 가로지르던 모습이 생중계될 만큼 미국에서는 전설적인 인물이라고해요.
I visited an exhibition by Michael Heizer. If you visit the famous Dia Beacon museum in Upstate New York, there is a renowned work featuring massive depressions carved directly into the museum floor. He is the artist behind that incredible piece. I remember being so amazed and fascinated when I first saw it, so it was truly an honor to encounter his work once again. Michael Heizer is a pioneer of Land Art, known for working primarily on an immense scale. Since he often digs into the earth in deserts to create works comparable to architecture, it is rare to see his practice in a smaller gallery setting, but Gagosian is currently hosting a very impressive exhibition.
Michael Heizer is a pioneer of Land Art who emerged in the 1960s. Instead of painting on canvas, he is someone who goes out into the desert with excavators and dynamite to dig the earth and move massive boulders to create his art. His representative work, City, is a project where he spent 50 years creating structures resembling a vast ancient city in the middle of the Nevada desert. The scale is so enormous that it can only be fully taken in from an airplane. Even now, in his 80s, he continues to insist on working at a monumental scale. The massive boulder installation, Levitated Mass, located at the entrance of LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), is also his work. He is such a legendary figure in America that the sight of a specially designed trailer transporting that giant rock across the city was even broadcast live.

Negative sculptures
Gagosian is pleased to present two new negative sculptures by Michael Heizer, Convoluted Line A and Convoluted Line B (both 2024), at the gallery at 522 West 21st Street, New York. A small selection of related early drawings will also be on view. The sculptures represent the pinnacle of an artistic lineage that reaches back to Heizer’s earliest outdoor sculptures made in the 1960s in the Nevada and California deserts.
Among the artist’s most complex negative line sculptures, Convoluted Line A and Convoluted Line B are winding steel earth liners inserted into a raised concrete floor. Curved with the delicacy of a drawn line, they reflect the artist’s interest in precise mark making at monumental scale and the possibilities of line as sculptural form. Conceived with the gallery’s spacious interior in mind and placed in relation to one another, they span 87 1/2 feet in length and form a unified environment that encourages experiential viewing.
Heizer’s ongoing inquiry into the formal possibilities of line, size, and negative space began in the 1960s with shaped canvases composed with lighter and darker geometric passages to suggest the absence and presence of form. In 1967, he began employing these concepts in three-dimensional sculptures, cutting into the earth. Early negative line sculptures include the Nine Nevada Depressions (1968, no longer extant), multiple excavations in the form of loops, intersections, zigzags, and broken lines across 520 miles of terrain, escalating in Double Negative (1969), two 50-foot-deep cuts into two opposing mesa walls near the Virgin River in Nevada.
디아 비콘에서 마주했던 그 거대한 구멍들의 주인공을 이곳 뉴욕 가고시안에서 다시 만난 건 정말 특별한 경험이었어요. 대지미술이라면 크리스토 밖에 몰랐었는데 마이클 하이저 작가님 확실하게 기억할수 있을것 같아요. 대지를 캔버스 삼아 포크레인으로 선을 긋는 거장의 집념이 갤러리라는 정제된 공간 안에 어떻게 안착했는지 직접 확인하며, 예술이 가질 수 있는 물리적인 힘과 그 너머의 숭고함에 대해 깊이 사유해 본 시간이었어요.
단순한 조각을 넘어 하나의 지형을 설계하고 그 안에서 관람객이 직접 공간의 무게를 경험하게 만드는 마이클 하이저의 세계는 저에게 큰 영감을 주었어요. 80세가 넘은 나이에도 여전히 거대한 스케일을 고집하는 그의 열정을 보며, 저 또한 많은걸 느끼게 해주었어요. 감사합니다.
It was a truly special experience to encounter the artist behind those massive depressions I saw at Dia Beacon once again here at Gagosian in New York. While Christo was the only Land Art artist I was familiar with before, I feel like I will now remember Michael Heizer quite clearly. It was a time to deeply contemplate the physical power of art and the sublimity beyond it, as I witnessed how the tenacity of a master—who uses the earth as a canvas and draws lines with excavators—settled into the refined space of a gallery.
Michael Heizer’s world, which goes beyond simple sculpture to design a landscape and allows viewers to experience the weight of space themselves, has given me immense inspiration. Seeing his passion for maintaining such a monumental scale even in his 80s truly made me feel and learn so much. Thank you.
