안녕하세요. 모마 PS1 제임스터렐 설치작업 보러 다녀왔어요. 이 작품은 1986년에 이곳에 설치된 이후로 미술관의 일부가 되었어요. 즉, 미술관이 문을 닫지 않는 한 언제든 볼 수 있다고 하는데요. 다만 날씨의 제약을 받는 작업이라 문을 닫을때가 종종 있어요. 저도 지난번에 갔을때는 완전히 닫혀있었는데요, 이번엔 운이 좋았어요.  영구 설치물이지만, 공간이 협소해서 미술관 입장권과는 별도로 예약을 해야 할 때가 많아요. 특히 일몰(Sunset) 시간에 맞춰 하늘 색이 변하는 걸 보는 게 '백미'라 그 시간대는 인기가 아주 높다고하네요. 저는 그냥 예약 없이 갔었구요, 다행히 사람이 많지 않아 바로 들어갈 수 있었어요. 조명이나 일몰이 있을떄는 색이 어떻게 변하는지 궁금하지만 그건 다음번에 다시 확인 해 보려구요. 





I recently visited MoMA PS1 to see James Turrell’s installation work. Since its installation in 1986, this piece has become a permanent part of the museum. This means that as long as the museum is open, you can see it at any time. However, because it is a weather-dependent work, it is often closed during inclement weather. When I visited last time, it was completely closed, but this time I was lucky.

Although it is a permanent installation, the space is quite intimate, so you often need to make a separate reservation from your museum admission. In particular, watching the sky change colors during sunset is considered the "highlight" of the experience, making that time slot incredibly popular. I went without a reservation this time, and luckily, it wasn't crowded, so I was able to enter right away. I’m curious to see how the colors shift with the lighting program during sunset, but I’ll have to save that experience for my next visit.

제임스 터렐: Meeting

제임스 터렐의 유명한 '스카이스페이스(Skyspace)' 시리즈 중 하나인 Meeting은 관람객들이 아무런 방해 없이 하늘을 바라보도록 초대하는 장소 특정적(site-specific) 설치 작품입니다. 1960년대 로스앤젤레스를 중심으로 일어난 '빛과 공간(Light and Space)' 운동의 핵심 인물인 제임스 터렐은 주로 빛으로 구성된 예술 작품을 만듭니다. 그는 시각적 행위를 실체화함으로써 인간 지각의 본질에 대한 근본적인 질문을 탐구합니다.

Meeting은 터렐이 제작한 두 번째 스카이스페이스이자 미국 내에 설치된 첫 번째 작품으로, 이후 수십 년 동안 그가 제작하게 될 수많은 후속 작업의 원형(prototype)이 되었습니다. 원래 1976년 PS1의 설립자인 알래나 하이스(Alanna Heiss)가 개관 전시를 위해 의뢰했으나, 1980년이 되어서야 실현되었고, 터렐은 1986년 대중에게 공개될 때까지 수정을 거듭했습니다. 2016년, 기존 좌석을 교체하고 일출 및 일몰에 맞춰 동기화된 새로운 다색 조명 프로그램을 추가하는 보수 작업을 거친 후, 이 작품은 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)의 소장품이 되었습니다.

Meeting은 MoMA PS1 3층 북쪽에 위치해 있습니다. 일반 관람 시간 동안 미술관 입장권으로 관람이 가능하지만, 수용 인원이 제한되어 있으며 좌석은 선착순으로 제공됩니다. 관람객들은 날씨를 확인하고 그에 맞는 복장을 갖추기를 권장합니다. 비, 눈, 또는 기타 악천후 시에는 운영되지 않습니다.

이 설치 작품은 하늘의 톤이 점차 변함에 따라 색상이 미묘하게 바뀌는, 일출과 일몰에 동기화된 다채로운 조명 프로그램을 특징으로 합니다.

Meeting


One of artist James Turrell’s celebrated Skyspaces, Meeting is a site-specific installation that invites viewers to gaze upwards toward an unobstructed view of the sky. A key representative of the “Light and Space” movement centered in Los Angeles during the 1960s, James Turrell creates works of art that consist primarily of light, exploring fundamental questions about the nature of human perception by rendering tangible the act of vision.

Meeting was the second Skyspace that Turrell constructed and the first in the United States—becoming a prototype for the many subsequent such works he would construct over the following decades. Originally commissioned in 1976 by P.S.1 founder Alanna Heiss for the museum’s inaugural exhibition, the work was not realized until 1980, and Turrell continued to make modifications until it opened to the public in 1986. In 2016, after a renovation that replaced the original seating and added a new multi-colored lighting program synchronized with the sunrise and sunset, Meeting entered the collection of The Museum of Modern Art.

Meeting is located on the northern side of MoMA PS1’s third floor. Access is included with gallery admission during regular museum hours. Please note that capacity is limited and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors are encouraged to monitor the weather and dress accordingly. Meeting will be closed in the case of rain, snow, or other inclement weather.

The installation features a multicolored lighting program synchronized to sunrise and sunset that subtly shifts in color as the sky gradates in tone.

뉴욕의 분주한 소음이 잠시 멈추고, 오직 하늘과 나만이 마주하는 시간. 제임스 터렐의 Meeting은 우리에게 익숙한 하늘을 가장 낯설고도 아름다운 예술로 치환해 보여주었어요.

사각형의 프레임을 통해 바라보는 하늘은 마치 살아 움직이는 한 폭의 추상화 같았어요. 화려한 장치 하나 없이 오직 빛과 공간만으로 인간의 감각을 이토록 정화할 수 있다는 사실이 놀랍기만 했구요. 일몰의 화려한 색채는 아니었지만, 한낮의 투명한 파란색이 주는 그 명징한 고요함만으로도 충분히 위로받는 기분이었어요.

마침 얼마전에 첼시 리슨 갤러리에서 제임스 터렐의 새로운 개인전 하고 있어서 다녀왔는데요, 그 전시도 정말 좋았어요. 항상 명상하는 느낌이 들게하는 작가님이세요.  리슨갤러리 제임스터렐전  조만간 포스팅 올릴테니 그것도 많은 관심 부탁드려요. 감사합니다. 



A moment where the busy noise of New York City fades away, leaving only the sky and myself face-to-face. James Turrell’s Meeting transforms the familiar sky into the most unfamiliar yet beautiful art.

The sky viewed through that rectangular frame felt like a living, breathing abstract painting. It’s truly astonishing how he can purify human senses using only light and space, without a single flashy device. Though I didn’t catch the brilliant colors of sunset this time, the lucid stillness of the midday transparent blue was more than enough to feel comforted.

Coincidentally, I also visited James Turrell’s new solo exhibition currently held at Lisson Gallery in Chelsea, and that exhibition was truly wonderful as well. He is an artist whose work always evokes a sense of meditation. Thank you.
