안녕하세요. 오늘은 어퍼 이스트사이드의 데이비드 놀란 갤러리에 다녀온 포스팅이에요. 이곳에서 열린 <시, 음악, 건축 Poetry, Music, Architecture> 전시는 드로잉이라는 매체를 통해 우리가 세상을 경험하는 세 가지 방식을 탐구하는 무척 지적인 전시였어요.
루이스 칸 같은 거장 건축가의 드로잉부터 요린데 보이트의 현대적인 도표까지, 소리와 언어가 어떻게 눈에 보이는 '형태'로 변해가는지 그 경이로운 과정을 마주할 수 있었구요. 특히 갤러리 특유의 차분한 분위기 덕분에 작품 하나하나의 리듬에 더 깊이 몰입할 수 있었던 시간이었어요.
데이비드 놀란 갤러리는 뉴욕 어퍼 이스트사이드(UES)의 상징적인 갤러리 중 하나예요. 아주 실험적이면서도 미술사적으로 가치가 높은 '드로잉'과 '종이 작업'을 전문적으로 다루기로 유명해요. 이번 <Poetry, Music, Architecture> 전시는 데이비드 놀란 갤러리 특유의 섬세한 기획력이 돋보이는 전시예요. 특히 전설적인 건축가 루이스 칸(Louis I. Kahn) 의 드로잉을 갤러리 공간에서 직접 볼 수 있다는 건 정말 드문 기회에요. 이 갤러리의 다음전시도 보니 종이와 드로잉을 이용한 흥미로운 전시가 있더라구요. 이번주 다녀올 계획인데 갔다와서 꼭 포스팅 올릴게요.
Today, I’m sharing my visit to David Nolan Gallery on the Upper East Side. The exhibition <Poetry, Music, Architecture> held here was a profoundly intellectual show that explored the three ways we experience the world through the medium of drawing.
From the sketches of master architects like Louis I. Kahn to the contemporary diagrams of Jorinde Voigt, I was able to witness the marvelous process of how sound and language transform into visible "forms." Thanks to the gallery's characteristic calm atmosphere, I could immerse myself more deeply into the rhythm of each work.
David Nolan Gallery is one of the iconic galleries on New York’s Upper East Side (UES). It is renowned for specializing in "drawings" and "works on paper" that are both experimental and hold high art-historical value. This <Poetry, Music, Architecture> exhibition truly showcases the delicate curatorial expertise unique to David Nolan Gallery. In particular, it is a very rare opportunity to see the drawings of the legendary architect Louis I. Kahn firsthand in a gallery space. Looking at their upcoming schedule, I noticed another intriguing exhibition featuring paper and drawing. I plan to visit this week and will definitely post about it soon.

<시, 음악, 건축> 전시는 소리, 언어, 그리고 구축된 형태 사이의 자연스러운 연결을 반영하는 드로잉들을 선보입니다. 소네트의 구조, 악보, 혹은 건축가의 청사진처럼 드로잉은 사고하고 계획하며 아이디어에 형태를 부여하는 도구가 됩니다. 세 가지 매체 중 음악만이 완성된 상태에서 형태가 없지만, 구조를 통해 작업하는 예술가들에게 끊임없이 영감을 줍니다.
시, 음악, 건축은 리듬, 화성, 그리고 운율을 공유합니다. 리차드 아트슈와거, 배리 르 바, 루이스 칸, 줄리아 피쉬, 그리고 요린데 보이트의 작품들은 각각 고유한 방식으로 언어, 소리, 구조와 관계를 맺습니다. 이들의 예술은 단어, 리듬, 공간의 상호 연결된 본질에 대한 새로운 이해를 제공하며, 드로잉을 이 세 가지 영역이 만나는 벤다이어그램의 중심, 즉 사유가 형태가 되기 위한 핵심 조건으로 설정합니다.
리차드 아트슈와거(Richard Artschwager): 아치형 통로와 창문 같은 건축적 요소를 통해 공간을 이동하는 소리의 감각을 드로잉으로 표현했습니다. 문, 창문, 탁자 등 그가 평생 탐구한 여섯 가지 일상적 어휘가 작품에 등장합니다.
줄리아 피쉬(Julia Fish): 건축적 환상곡이자 자유롭고 표현적인 음악 형식을 뜻하는 '카프리치오(Capriccio)'라는 중의적 의미를 통해 구조와 내면의 리듬을 결합합니다.
루이스 칸(Louis I. Kahn): 전설적인 건축가인 그는 프랑스 카르카손의 성벽 드로잉을 통해 문자가 되기 전의 기호 같은 표시들을 남겼습니다. 아테네 아크로폴리스 드로잉은 그가 평생 추구한 빛과 구조, 시적 명징함의 정수를 보여줍니다.
배리 르 바(Barry Le Va): 콘크리트 벙커 조각을 위한 연구를 통해 폭력의 건축을 탐구했습니다. 벙커의 실루엣과 피를 상징하는 밀도 높은 응고물들을 통해 보호와 긴장, 방어적인 내면의 건축을 묘사합니다.
요린데 보이트(Jorinde Voigt): 실험적인 건축 형태와 텍스트를 대화하게 합니다. 그녀의 드로잉은 마치 악보나 개념도처럼 보이며, 지각과 기억, 사고의 움직임을 정교하게 지도처럼 그려냅니다.

Poetry, Music, Architecture presents drawings that reflect the natural connection between sound, language, and built form: three ways we shape and experience the world. Like a sonnet’s structure, musical notation, or an architect’s blueprint, drawing becomes a tool for thinking, planning, and giving form to ideas. Of the three media, music alone is formless in its completed state, yet it continues to inspire artists who work with and through structure. Poetry, music, and architecture share rhythm, harmony, and cadence. The works by Richard Artschwager, Barry Le Va, Louis I. Kahn, Julia Fish, and Jorinde Voigt each engage with language, sound, and structure in unique ways. Together, their art offers a new understanding of the interconnected nature of words, rhythm, and space—one that puts drawing at the centre of this triple Venn diagram, the core condition for thought to become form.
Richard Artschwager’s Arched Passageway draws directly from architecture and interiors, and carries a sense of sound moving through space, as does Window with its rhythmic lines. The everyday object was a central part of Artschwager’s imagination. “Door, Window, Table, Basket, Mirror, Rug”—six objects he regularly returned to—became a long-standing vocabulary from the 1970s onward, appearing across drawing, sculpture, and painting. One example from this series is included in the exhibition.
Julia Fish’s Capriccio works connect music and architecture through language and the dual meaning of the term: in painting, an architectural fantasy that assembles imagined spaces; in music, a composition that is free in form, fast, expressive and virtuosic. Her works reference through their title and refer to these qualities, uniting structure, variation, and a sense of interior rhythm.
Louis I. Kahn’s drawing BATTLEMENT, Carcassonne, France is an expression of architectural observation with markings that resemble asemic writing. His VIEW FROM THE PARTHENON, ACROPOLIS, Athens, Greece reflects the period he spent in Rome and Greece—years that shaped his understanding of light, structure, and the poetic clarity that defined his later work and philosophy.
Barry Le Va’s Studies for a Bunker Sculpture draw on Paul Virilio’s Bunker Archaeology, which documents the rounded concrete bunkers built along the Atlantic Wall. Designed to absorb and deflect impact, these structures represent an architecture of violence. In his drawings, silhouettes of bunkers appear alongside dense “coagulations,” which are symbolic of blood and its capacity to seal and protect. Large forms press inward around smaller circular shapes creating a feeling of tension—a body protecting itself, or from another perspective, looking out as through a mask—an inward-turning architecture that is both defensive and aware of outside force.
Jorinde Voigt’s Poem series puts experimental architectural forms into dialogue with written text. The geometric structures carry a sense of complex architecture, with the poem itself embedded within the form. Working primarily through drawing, Voigt creates compositions that read like musical scores or conceptual diagrams, mapping the movement of perception, memory, and thought.

단순히 선을 긋는 행위를 넘어, 보이지 않는 소리와 철학이 어떻게 드로잉이라는 단단한 '구조'로 안착하는지 깊이 경험할 수 있었던 시간이었어요. 특히 거장 루이스 칸의 드로잉 앞에서 느꼈던 그 고요한 질서와 시적 명징함은 갤러리를 나선 뒤에도 오랫동안 제 마음에 리듬으로 남을 것 같아요.
드로잉과 종이 작업이 주는 이 담백하고도 깊은 울림이야말로 데이비드 놀란 갤러리만의 진정한 매력이 아닐까 싶어요. 이번 주에 예정된 이 갤러리의 다음 전시에서는 또 어떤 섬세한 기록들이 저를 기다리고 있을지 벌써부터 기대되네요. 너무나 고풍스러운 옛 대저택 같은 타운하우스 갤러리라 갈때마다 설레이는 마음으로 가게되는 데이비드 놀란 갤러리였어요. 감사합니다.
It was a time to deeply experience how invisible sounds and philosophies settle into a solid "structure" through the act of drawing, going beyond the simple mark-making on paper. In particular, the quiet order and poetic clarity I felt in front of the master Louis I. Kahn's drawings will likely remain as a rhythm in my heart long after leaving the gallery.
I believe this simple yet profound resonance of drawing and works on paper is the true charm unique to David Nolan Gallery. I am already looking forward to seeing what delicate records await me at their next exhibition scheduled for this week. David Nolan Gallery is housed in such an elegant, historic townhouse that feels like an old grand mansion; it’s a place I visit with a fluttering heart every single time. Thank you.
