당시에는 다들 "이제 그림(회화)의 시대는 끝났다"라고 말하며 설치나 개념 예술만 하던 시절이었는데 수잔 로텐버그는 1970년대에 다시 '그림의 힘'을 증명하며 회화의 부활을 이끈 선구자였다고해요. 특히 그녀가 그린 '말(Horse)' 그림들은 미술사에 남을 기념비적인 작품들이에요. 저도 이 작가의 작품은 실제로 처음보았는데요, 전시장을 가득채운 대형 말 그림들이 화려한 컬러나 형태 없이도 보는 사람을 압도하는 단순함의 매력이 있었어요. 하우저앤 워스 1층 전시장은 천고도 높고, 공간이 아주 웅장한데 그 공간을 부족함없이 느끼게 해주는 힘이 있었어요.
더 웨더(The Weather)
하우저 앤 워스는 저명한 예술가 수잔 로텐버그의 작품 세계를 기리는 갤러리 최초의 전시인 더 웨더(The Weather)를 개최하게 되어 매우 기쁩니다. 이번 전시에서는 작가의 전 생애를 아우르는 14점의 회화를 선보이며 그중에는 그동안 공개된 적이 없거나 거의 전시되지 않았던 희귀한 캔버스들이 포함되어 있습니다. 미술사적 걸작뿐만 아니라 로텐버그가 수십 년 동안 자신의 곁에 두거나 소중히 간직해온 작품들도 함께 소개되어 그녀의 불안하면서도 광활한 내면세계를 이례적으로 친밀하게 엿볼 수 있게 해줍니다. 이를 통해 그녀만의 독창적인 시각을 정의하는 가공되지 않은 정서적 깊이가 고스란히 드러납니다.
50년이 넘는 세월 동안 로텐버그는 형식적인 엄격함과 정확한 직관에 따라 강력한 회화적 언어를 구축해 왔습니다. 1970년대 중반 미니멀리즘의 관습을 급진적으로 깨뜨린 충격적인 등장부터 말년의 유령 같은 형상들에 이르기까지 그녀는 회화라는 매체를 끊임없이 재정의하며 현대 회화의 재등장 과정에서 중심적인 역할을 수행했습니다. 로텐버그는 저항과 타자성이라는 치열하고 때로는 수수께끼 같은 언어를 작품에 암호화하여 예술적 정직성과 자결권의 상징이 되었으며 그녀의 작품 세계는 수많은 후대 화가들에게 깊은 영감을 주는 원천이 되었습니다.
이번 전시는 로텐버그의 캔버스마다 담긴 가슴 뭉클하고 개인적인 촉각적 즉각성을 강조합니다. 그녀는 활기찬 붓질을 사용하여 캔버스 안에 일종의 대기압과 같은 효과를 만들어냈으며 그녀는 이를 종종 날씨(The Weather)라고 불렀습니다. 이러한 대기 속에서 정체를 알 수 없는 인물들이 등장하곤 하는데 초기작에서 단색의 배경 위에 그려진 대담한 말의 윤곽선은 마치 태고의 힘을 머금은 상형문자와도 같았습니다. 이후 인체와 동물의 형상들은 압박을 받으며 접히고 부서지고 증식하거나 용해되는 과정을 보여줍니다. 비평가 피터 셸달은 그녀의 그림이 내장보다 더 높은 곳을 타격하며 광적이면서도 차갑고 머릿속에서 얼어붙은 폭력과 같지만 동시에 매우 견고하고 영리하게 그려졌다고 평한 바 있습니다.
아웃라인(1978)의 가장자리에 남겨진 자신의 손바닥 자국 유령부터 레드 헤드(1981)의 대담한 선들에 이르기까지 로텐버그의 사실적이고 비유적인 손길은 작품 전체에서 뚜렷하게 나타납니다. 벌에 쏘여 죽음의 문턱까지 갔던 경험 이후에 그려진 라스 블랑카스(1996-1997) 속의 떠다니는 머리들은 의식과 죽음 사이의 경계 공간을 보여주며 올 나잇 롱(2000-2001)의 뒤엉킨 몸들은 에너지로 고동칩니다. 로텐버그가 세상을 떠나기 직전에 그린 무제(초록색 손과 띠)(2020)의 움켜잡은 손들은 긴박하면서도 애도하는 듯한 느낌을 주며 전시된 모든 작품과 마찬가지로 수많은 내면을 품은 예술가의 본질이 찬란하게 빛납니다.
전시와 병행하여 하우저 앤 워스 출판사는 수잔 로텐버그의 커리어를 추적하는 풍부한 도판의 모노그래프를 발간합니다. 1970년대 그녀를 유명하게 만든 기념비적인 말 그림부터 1980년대의 파편화된 사지와 움직이는 형상들 그리고 1990년대 작품에 깊이 스며든 뉴멕시코 사막 풍경의 자연적 드라마까지 모두 담고 있습니다. 큐레이터 알렉시스 로우리의 서문과 함께 작가 및 예술가들의 사유가 담긴 글들이 수록되어 있으며 세심하게 조사된 전기를 통해 로텐버그의 비범한 삶에 대한 통찰력을 제공합니다.
The Weather
Hauser & Wirth is pleased to announce The Weather, the gallery’s first exhibition dedicated to the work of celebrated artist Susan Rothenberg (1945 – 2020). The Weather presents 14 paintings—including canvases rarely and never before exhibited—that span the arc of the artist’s career. In addition to canonical masterpieces, the exhibition features works that Rothenberg both lived with and tucked away for decades. Together, these works offer an uncommonly intimate glimpse into the restless expanse of Rothenberg’s psyche, revealing the raw emotional depth that defined her singular vision.
For more than five decades, Rothenberg developed a powerful language through painting that was guided by an intrinsic sense of formal rigor as well as her unerring intuition. From the radical breaking open of minimalist conventions to the spectral apparitions of her late paintings, Rothenberg continuously redefined the medium, placing her at the center of the global re-emergence of painting that began in the mid-1970s. Rothenberg encoded a fierce language of resistance into her work, establishing herself as a model of artistic integrity and self-determination. In so doing, she developed an oeuvre which has served as an inspiration to generations of painters.
The exhibition highlights the personal facture of each of Rothenberg’s canvases and their haptic immediacy. Using vigorous brushwork, she whipped up a kind of atmospheric pressure in each canvas—what she often called ‘the weather’—from which her enigmatic figures emerged. From the outset, the bold contours of Rothenberg’s horses, which she set against agitated monochromatic backgrounds, resembled glyphs charged with a primordial force. Later bodies, both human and animal, come under pressure, they fold, break apart, multiply and dissolve. The critic Peter Schjeldahl once observed that the paintings hit higher than the viscera, with an effect that is both frenetic and icy.
From the ghost of her own palm prints at the margins of Outline (1978) to the bold lines of Red Head (1981), Rothenberg’s literal and figurative touch is unmistakable throughout her work. The floating heads of Las Blancas (1996 – 1997), painted after a near-death experience, show her adrift in the liminal space between consciousness and mortality, while the raucous entwined bodies of All Night Long (2000 – 2001) pulse with energy. And in Untitled (Green Hands with Band) (2020), painted just before Rothenberg’s death, the grasping hands feel both urgent and elegiac. Here, as across the works on view, the essence of the artist radiates.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Hauser & Wirth Publishers will release Susan Rothenberg: The Weather, a richly illustrated monograph tracing her career from the monumental horse paintings of the 1970s to the fragmented limbs of the 1980s and the New Mexico desert landscapes of the 1990s. Introduced by curator Alexis Lowry, striking reproductions of Rothenberg’s paintings are paired with responses by writers, artists, and thinkers, while a meticulously researched biography provides insight into Rothenberg’s remarkable life.
살아있음의 본질
이 작가의 핵심 주제는 형태와 공간의 긴장감 그리고 살아있음의 본질이라고 할 수 있어요. 수잔 로텐버그가 활동을 시작한 1970년대 뉴욕은 차가운 기하학적 도형만 가득하던 미니멀리즘이 지배하던 시기였어요. 하지만 그녀는 인간의 감정이 느껴지는 뜨거운 그림을 다시 그리고 싶어 했고 그 고민 끝에 찾아낸 완벽한 소재가 바로 말(Horse)이었다고 하네요. 이후 작가는 신체 일부등으로 작품의 주제를 확장시켰고 이를통해 원초적인 감정과 육체적인 고통 혹은 죽음과 삶의 경계를 아주 거칠고 힘 있는 붓질로 표현한 것이죠.
정말 현장에서 본 작가의 작업은 사진으로 표현되지 않는 터치감의 특징이 있었어요. 작품또한 거의 모두 다 대형 작업이라 작가의 작업을 처음 접라는 저에겐 인상깊게 다가왔어요. 형태, 컬러, 주제 모두 단순화된 페인팅인데 깊은 울림이 남는 작업들이었거든요. 표현의 절제라는걸 생각하게 만드는 작업이었어요. 다른곳에서 또 작가의 다른 작업을 보길 바라며. 다음 포스팅으로 돌아올게요. 감사합니다.
