안녕하세요. 가고시안에서 있었던 리처드 디벤콘 전시 다녀왔어요. 평생을 미국 서부 캘리포니아에서 활동하며, 그 지역 특유의 밝고 투명한 빛과 공기를 캔버스에 담아낸 작가에요. 작가가 활동하던 당시 미술계는 "추상만 그려야 한다" 혹은 "구상만 그려야 한다"는 고정관념이 강했는데, 디벤콘은 이 두 세계를 아주 유연하게 오갔다고 하네요. 특히 그의 '오션 파크(Ocean Park)' 시리즈는 현대 추상 회화의 정수로 불리며 전 세계 주요 미술관이 소장하고 있는 보물 같은 작품들이에요.

가고시안은 세계에서 가장 힘 있는 갤러리 중 하나인데요, 이번 전시는 디벤콘 재단과 가고시안이 파트너십을 맺고 여는 첫 번째 전시라 미술계의 관심이 매우 뜨겁다고 하네요. 자유로운 주제와 표현 방식 만큼이나 흥미로운 전시였어요. 특히 작가의 드로잉들은 형식에 얽매이지 않으면서도 일관된 스타일을 유지하고있었어요. 더욱 알아가고 싶은 작가의 작품들이었어요.





 I recently visited the Richard Diebenkorn exhibition at Gagosian. Diebenkorn is an artist who spent nearly his entire life in California, capturing the region's uniquely bright, transparent light and atmosphere on his canvases. During his time, the art world held a strong bias that an artist should focus strictly on either abstraction or figuration, but I learned that Diebenkorn moved between these two worlds with incredible flexibility. In particular, his "Ocean Park" series is hailed as a masterpiece of modern abstract painting and is considered a treasure held by major museums worldwide.

Gagosian is one of the most powerful galleries in the world, and this exhibition has garnered intense interest from the art community as it is the first show following the new partnership between the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation and Gagosian. The exhibition was as fascinating as his free-spirited subjects and expressive techniques. I was especially impressed by his drawings, which maintained a consistent style while remaining unfettered by formal constraints. These are works by an artist I truly want to explore further.

형태와 주제에 대한 활기찬 실험


가고시안은 2025년 11월 8일, 뉴욕 매디슨 에비뉴 980번지에서 리처드 디벤콘의 회화 및 종이 작업 전시를 개최하게 되어 기쁩니다. 리처드 디벤콘 재단과 협력하여 기획하고 재스퍼 샤프(Jasper Sharp)가 큐레이팅한 이번 전시는 가고시안이 디벤콘의 전속을 맡게 된 후 열리는 첫 전시입니다. 이는 저명한 미국의 화가이자 데생 화가, 판화가인 디벤콘의 작품이 다시 이 장소로 돌아왔음을 의미합니다. 갤러리는 1992년 11월부터 1993년 1월까지 이곳에서 11점의 '오션 파크(Ocean Park)' 회화를 선보였는데, 이는 1993년 3월 작가가 타계하기 전 가졌던 마지막 회화 전시였습니다.

이번 전시는 작가의 60년 세월을 아우르는 종이 작업과 모든 시기의 회화를 선보이며 연속성과 변주를 강조합니다. 전시장에는 에드워드 호퍼와 폴 세잔의 영향을 반영한 1943년 수채화, 추상표현주의 시절의 회화, 앙리 마티스와의 오랜 교감을 보여주며 서사적인 '오션 파크' 주기의 규모를 예견하는 드물게 공개되는 1960년 대형 누드 캔버스, 그리고 그의 작업 방식을 엿볼 수 있는 마지막 10년의 선택된 작품들이 포함되어 있습니다.

잉크, 흑연, 목탄, 콜라주, 과슈, 유채, 아크릴을 사용한 디벤콘의 드로잉과 종이 회화는 마크 메이킹(표시하기)과 기질로서의 종이 사용에 대한 작가의 애정을 증명합니다. 작품의 흐름은 1975년 '오션 파크' 종이 작업의 엄격한 기하학적 형태부터, 1988년경 연결된 포스터 보드 위에 작업한 복잡하고 빛나는 혼합 매체 작품에 이르기까지 형태와 주제에 대한 활기찬 실험을 보여줍니다. 또한 평붓의 직선적인 획의 단순함을 극대화한 1988~91년경의 과슈 작품부터, 생애 말기에 목탄을 사용하여 수정된 격자 무늬 위에 나뭇잎에서 영감을 얻은 선들을 층층이 쌓아 올린 수직 작품까지 아우릅니다. 1988~89년 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)의 '리처드 디벤콘 드로잉전'을 기획하기 전 1985년부터 작가의 집을 방문했던 저명한 디벤콘 학자 존 엘더필드는, 그의 "드로잉으로 생각하기"가 "그가 의도한 바에 접근할 수 있게 해준다"고 언급했습니다.

큐레이터 샤프는 "이번 전시는 다양한 매체를 다루는 디벤콘의 비범한 재능과 스케일 장악력뿐만 아니라, 수십 년간의 추상 및 구상 작업을 통해 그의 전 생애에 걸쳐 공명하는 회화적 반복구를 보여준다"라고 관찰합니다. 또한 "디벤콘은 수세기에 걸쳐 펼쳐진 대화를 지속해 왔고, 동시대 예술가들과 깊이 교류하며 오늘날 예술가들에게 계속해서 영감을 주는 길을 개척했다"라고 덧붙였습니다.

Gagosian is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Richard Diebenkorn at 980 Madison Avenue in New York, opening on November 8, 2025. Organized in partnership with the Richard Diebenkorn Foundation and curated by Jasper Sharp, the exhibition inaugurates Gagosian’s representation of Diebenkorn. This marks a return of the distinguished American painter, draftsman, and printmaker’s work to the location, as the gallery presented eleven Ocean Park paintings there from November 1992 to January 1993—the artist’s final exhibition of paintings before his death in March 1993.

Working for almost all his life in California, Diebenkorn pursued a distinctive career, beginning as an Abstract Expressionist, developing a unique approach to figuration in the mid-1950s, and a decade later returning to abstraction with the masterful Ocean Park series (1967–88). The interchange between abstraction and figuration that took place over the course of his career is an essential aspect of his achievement. In an era when a single direction defined many artists’ production, Diebenkorn moved fluidly across modalities and embraced an active approach to composition and revision, often retaining traces of a work’s process and creation—what the artist referred to as a picture “sitting right.”

The exhibition features six decades of the artist’s works on paper and paintings from every period, emphasizing continuity and variation. The works on view include a striking range of examples from across Diebenkorn’s career, including a 1943 watercolor that reflects the influence of Edward Hopper and Paul Cezanne, paintings from his Abstract Expressionist years, a rarely seen monumental 1960 canvas of nudes that exemplifies his long-term engagement with Henri Matisse and anticipates the scale of the epic Ocean Park cycle, and selections from his final decade that provide insights into his working practice.

Diebenkorn’s drawings and paintings on paper, using ink, graphite, charcoal, collage, gouache, oil, and acrylic evince the artist’s love of both mark making and using paper as a substrate. The sweep of this work reveals a vigorous experimentation with forms and subjects, from the rigid geometry of a 1975 ink and gouache Ocean Park sheet, to an intricate and luminous c. 1988 mixed-media work on joined poster board; from a c. 1988–91 gouache in which he maximized the simplicity of a flat brush’s rectilinear stroke against a creamy, coated surface, to a vertical work made late in life on which he used charcoal to layer foliage-inspired lines over a modified grid. Esteemed Diebenkorn scholar John Elderfield, who began visiting the artist at his home in 1985 prior to curating The Drawings of Richard Diebenkorn for the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1988–89), referred to his “thinking in drawing” that “allows him access to what he intended.”

“The exhibition demonstrates Diebenkorn’s extraordinary facility with different media and his command of scale, as well as the pictorial refrains that resonate across his oeuvre through decades of both abstract and representational work,” observes Sharp. “Diebenkorn sustained conversations that have unfolded across centuries, engaged deeply with his contemporaries, and forged a path that continues to inspire artists today.”

이번 전시는 대작 회화보다는 주로 종이 위의 드로잉 작업들로 채워져 있었는데요. 덕분에 거장의 고민과 손길을 훨씬 가까이서 느낄 수 있는 아주 특별한 시간이었어요.
완성된 결과물로서의 그림보다, 그 그림을 찾아가는 과정 속의 치열한 고민을 엿보는 것을 좋아하는 분들이라면 이번 드로잉 전시가 더욱 감동적으로 다가올 것 같아요. 거장의 시선이 머물렀던 그 투명한 종이 위의 공기가  기분 좋은 영감이 되길 바랄게요. 그럼 이번 뉴욕 가고시안 전시 리뷰도 유익하셨길 바라며 마칠게요. 감사합니다.



This exhibition was primarily composed of drawings on paper rather than large-scale paintings. Thanks to this, it was a very special time where I could feel the master’s thoughts and touch from a much closer perspective.
