안녕하세요. 루이즈 부르주아 전시 다녀왔어요. 

요건 전시기간이 아주 긴 편이라 아직도 진행되고 있는 전시에요. 하우저앤워스에서 아주 긴 호흡을 가지고 여유있게 준비한 전시임을 알 수 있어요. 한국에서나 미국에서 여러번 보았던 작가의 전시이고, 작품수도 엄청나게 많은 작가이지만, 볼 때마다 새로운 느낌을 주는 작가에요. 특히나 조작을 전공한 전공자들에겐  교과서적인 존재라 미술의 정석, 조각의 정석같은 작가로 여겨지는 작가에요. 특히나 여성 작가들에겐 더욱 그러하리라 예상이되는 작가구요. 

우리에겐 '거미(Maman)' 조각으로 너무나 익숙한 작가이지만, 이번 전시는 그녀의 예술 세계에서 그동안 조금은 덜 알려졌던 '추상'의 면모를 깊이 있게 들여다볼 수 있는 아주 특별한 기회였어요. 70년이라는 긴 세월 동안 그녀가 구상과 추상을 넘나들며 쌓아온 내밀한 언어들을 한자리에서 만날 수 있었거든요.  특히 이번 전시 'Gathering Wool'은 한 번도 공개되지 않았던 후기 조각들과 종이 작업들이 대거 포함되어 있어 더욱 설레는 마음으로 다녀왔어요. 필립 라랏-스미스의 기획을 통해 초기작부터 후기작까지 일관되게 흐르는 그녀만의 상징적인 추상 언어를 재발견할 수 있었어요.

 I recently visited the Louise Bourgeois exhibition. This show has a fairly long run, so it’s still ongoing. You can really feel that Hauser & Wirth took their time to prepare this exhibition with great care and depth. Although I’ve seen her work many times both in Korea and the U.S., and she is an incredibly prolific artist, her work always feels fresh every time I encounter it. For those of us who majored in sculpture, she is a "textbook" figure—the ultimate gold standard of art and sculpture. I imagine this sentiment is even stronger for many women artists.

While she is most famous for her iconic 'Maman' (the giant spider) sculpture, this exhibition offered a very special opportunity to look deeply into the lesser-known 'abstract' side of her artistic world. It was a rare chance to see the intimate language she built over 70 years, seamlessly moving between figuration and abstraction. I was particularly excited to visit because this exhibition, titled 'Gathering Wool,' includes a large number of late sculptures and works on paper that have never been shown before. Through Philip Larratt-Smith’s curation, I was able to rediscover the symbolic abstract language that flows consistently from her early works to her final pieces.

Gathering Wool

70년에 걸친 긴 경력 동안, 루이스 부르주아는 추상보다 형상을 특별히 더 중시하지 않았으며, 한 재료를 다른 재료보다 더 선호하지도 않았습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그녀가 추상과 맺어온 관계는 상대적으로 명확하게 정의되거나 이해되지 못했고, 전후 미술의 주류 흐름 속에서 그 위치를 찾기도 쉽지 않았습니다.

필립 라랏-스미스(Philip Larratt-Smith)가 기획한 이번 전시 '개더링 울(Gathering Wool)'은 이전에 한 번도 전시된 적 없는 다수의 후기 조각, 부조, 종이 작업들을 통해 작가가 추상과 맺은 복잡한 관계를 탐구합니다. 이 작품들은 부르주아의 초기작들과 함께 설치되어 그녀가 일관되게 다루어온 주제들을 조명하고, 그녀만의 상징적인 추상 언어가 어떻게 발전해 왔는지를 보여줄 예정입니다.

Over the course of her seven-decade career, Louise Bourgeois never privileged figuration over abstraction, any more than she favored one material over another, and yet her relationship to abstraction has been less well defined and understood, less easily situated within the main currents of postwar art.

‘Gathering Wool,’ curated by Philip Larratt-Smith, explores the artist’s complex relationship to abstraction through a series of late sculptures, reliefs and works on paper, many of which have never been exhibited before. These will be installed alongside a selection of earlier works to illuminate the consistency of Bourgeois’s themes and her development of a symbolic abstract language.

마음이 가는 대로 내버려 두는 상태

이번 전시의 타이틀은 부르주아가 1990년에 제작한 신비로운 작품에서 따왔습니다. '개더링 울(Gathering Wool)'은 반추, 몽상, 혹은 마음이 가는 대로 내버려 두는 상태를 의미하는 표현으로, 의식적이고 목적이 분명한 사고로부터 벗어난 휴식을 뜻합니다. 이는 부르주아가 작업실에서 다양한 형태와 과정을 실험할 때 가졌던 정신적 상태이기도 했습니다.

그녀는 생각의 흔적, 꿈의 파편, 덧없는 추측, 예감, 공상, 그리고 직관들이 하나의 형태로 응집되는 그 과정을 신뢰했지만, 그 결과물은 그녀 자신에게조차 신비로운 영역으로 남아 있었습니다. 작품 자체는 4개의 패널로 이루어진 높은 반원형 스크린 앞에 원형으로 배치된 7개의 나무 구체로 구성되어 있습니다. 1990년작 '개더링 울(Gathering Wool)'은 조각이자 동시에 환경 설치물이라는 점에서, 그녀의 가장 유명한 연작인 '셀(Cells)' 시리즈의 선구적인 작품이라 할 수 있습니다.

Gathering wool

The exhibition takes its title from an enigmatic work Bourgeois created in 1990. Gathering wool is an expression signifying rumination, daydreaming, letting the mind wander—a break from conscious, purposive thinking. This was the mental state in which Bourgeois worked as she experimented with forms and processes in her studio. She trusted the process by which these thought traces, fragments of dreams, idle speculations, hunches, fancies and intuitions coalesced into a form, but it remained mysterious even to her. The piece itself consists of seven wooden spheres arranged in a circle in front of a tall semicircular screen made up of four panels. ‘Gathering Wool’ (1990) is a precursor of her celebrated Cells in that it is both a sculpture and an environmental installation.

This Louise Bourgeois exhibition was a special journey, much like following a map of the subconscious that the master explored throughout her life. Beyond her familiar giant spider figures, the abstract languages she drew from daydreams and intuition have a mysterious power to touch the viewer's deepest emotions. It was a truly meaningful experience to witness the brilliant starting point that eventually led to her celebrated 'Cells' series in the 90s.

For those majoring in sculpture, this offers an essential study of form, while for collectors, it is a premier opportunity to encounter rare works condensed with the artist's private philosophy. If you want to witness the gold standard of art that never fades with time, do not miss this show at Hauser & Wirth.
