안녕하세요. 로렌스 위너 전시 다녀왔어요.
개념 미술의 아버지'라 불리는 로렌스 위너Lawrence Weiner는 그림을 그리는 대신 '글자'를 조각이라고 주장하며 미술의 역사를 새로 쓴 분이에요. 작가는 "말(Language)도 공간을 차지하고 의미를 전달하니까 조각이다"라고 선언했어요. 벽에 써진 글귀 그 자체가 작품인 거죠. 이 작가의 철학 중 가장 멋진 건 "내가 글자를 벽에 써놓았지만, 그걸 읽고 머릿속에서 어떤 이미지를 떠올릴지는 당신(관객)의 마음이다"라고 한 거예요. 즉, 작품의 완성은 작가가 아니라 보는 사람의 머릿속에서 일어난다고 믿었어요. 조각상은 무거워서 옮기기 힘들지만, 로렌스 위너의 작품은 글자 정보만 있으면 세상 어디든, 어떤 언어로든 설치할 수 있어요. 그래서 "특정 문화에 갇히지 않는 예술"로 추앙받는다고해요.
전시장에 들어서면 정말 아무것도 없이 벽면에 텍스트들로만 가득 차 있었어요. 실험적이고 개념적인 전시를 많이하는 글래드스톤 답게 공간과 아주 잘어울리는 전시었구요. 건물 외벽에도 텍스트 설치작업 전시되고 있었어요. 역시나 개념미술의 교과서 같은 존재로서 아주 실험적인 전시였구요. 글래드스톤 21번가 전시장은 이 갤러리의 전시 중에서도 가장 실험적인 전시들을 주로 하는것 같아요. 이번에도 역시나 파격적인 전시였어요.
AS OFTEN AS NOT
글래드스톤 갤러리는 이번 9월 뉴욕에서 로렌스 위너의 첫 번째 전시인 'AS OFTEN AS NOT'을 개최하게 되어 매우 기쁩니다. 이번 전시는 위너의 50년 작업 생애를 아우르는 20점 이상의 언어 기반 조각 작품들을 선보입니다. 위너는 자신의 삶과 작업이 특정 형태에 얽매이지 않으면서도 구체적인 대상을 만들어내는 것이었으며 이를 통해 자신의 예술이 이국적인 것으로 치부되지 않고 한 문화에서 다른 문화로 자유롭게 이동할 수 있기를 바랐습니다. 이번 전시는 대재앙적인 사건이나 엔트로피 그리고 오늘날 우리 삶을 가로막는 경계와 같은 변화의 영원한 문제들을 다루며 이는 위너 특유의 언어와 그래픽 스타일을 통해 해석됩니다. 특히 글래드스톤 21번가 공간을 위해 특별히 설계된 이번 전시는 건물 외벽의 설치 작품을 포함하여 위너의 1969년 미발표 원고인 '터미널 바운더리(Terminal Boundaries)'의 작품들을 특징으로 합니다.

'AS OFTEN AS NOT' 전시를 준비하며 로렌스 위너 스튜디오는 전시 작품들의 전례와 글래드스톤 21번가라는 장소적 맥락을 깊이 고려했습니다. 작품의 온전함을 보존하기 위해 단순하면서도 미묘한 과정을 거쳐 구상된 이번 전시는 장소 특정적 설치의 특성을 잘 보여줍니다. 또한 전시에 사용된 모든 서체는 위너가 직접 디자인한 것으로 각 관객이 스스로 작품의 의미를 결정하기를 바랐던 작가의 의도를 강조합니다. 로렌스 위너의 배우자인 앨리스 짐머만 위너는 새로운 전시가 시작될 때마다 로렌스 본인이 직접 작업을 어떻게 실행했는지 확인하기 위한 연구 과정을 거친다고 밝혔습니다. 오랜 시간 축적된 전시 역사의 종합이 오늘날의 관점에서 이번 설치 방식을 결정했으며 장소와 배치 상황 역시 핵심적인 역할을 했습니다. 이번 전시에서 위너가 디자인한 서체를 모든 작품에 적용하기로 결정한 것은 작품의 진정한 의미는 관객의 결정에 달려 있다는 작가의 의도를 명확히 하기 위함입니다. 로렌스의 예술은 오늘날의 정치적 상황에 대해 보편적으로 이야기할 수 있지만 그의 궁극적인 바람은 언어 구성을 통해 각 관객에게 직접적으로 말을 거는 것이었습니다.

September in New York
Presentation features over 20 language-based, sculptural works spanning five
decades of Weiner’s practice

This September, Gladstone premieres its first exhibition of Lawrence Weiner’s (1942-2021) languagebased, sculptural work, AS OFTEN AS NOT.
The presentation addresses timeless issues of change:
cataclysmic events, entropy, and borders that impede our lives today, which are read via Weiner’s own
language and graphic style. Specially designed for Gladstone’s 21st Street location, the exhibition includes
an installation on the building's façade and features works from Weiner’s 1969 unpublished manuscript,
Terminal Boundaries.
Weiner considered his language-based works as sculptures and is celebrated for his approach to
artmaking, treating language as a three-dimensional object, whose materiality and dimensionality extend to
the many ways language can be applied to facets of culture and take on different meanings in different
contexts and through the lens of different viewers. AS OFTEN AS NOT highlights Weiner’s treatment of
language as the material component of his sculptural practice.
Throughout his career, Weiner eschewed formulas and remained adamant about not dictating how
audiences were to interpret his work, instead encouraging viewers to engage without any recipe or orders
for doing so. Reflecting the artist’s interest in both the specific and the general, Weiner’s work is imbued
with “specific ambiguity,” allowing it to transcend temporality and geographical context, such that it could
apply to any culture into which it could be placed.
In the development of AS OFTEN AS NOT, the Lawrence Weiner Studio considered the precedents for the
featured works as well as the context of their presentation at Gladstone’s 21st Street location. Conceived
through a process that was at once simple and nuanced in order to preserve the integrity of the works on
view, the presentation speaks to the site-specific nature of the installation. It also features a typeface
designed by Weiner, applied across all of the works in the exhibition, to underscore Weiner’s intention that
each viewer determine the meaning of the work for themselves.
“Each new presentation [of Lawrence’s work] begins with a research process to determine how the work
had been formally executed by Lawrence himself,” states Alice Zimmerman Weiner. “A synthesis of
exhibition histories accumulated over the years in large part determined this installation within today’s
terms; site and circumstances of placement also play a key role. For Gladstone, the [Lawrence Weiner]
Studio decided to apply the typeface Lawrence designed to every work in this exhibition, reasoning that
this presentation would make Lawrence’s intent clear: the work’s veritable meaning is the viewer’s
decision. Lawrence’s art can speak generally to the politics of today, but his ultimate desire was to speak to
each viewer via his compositions in language.”

로렌스 위너의 이번 전시는 예술이 반드시 손으로 만져지는 형상을 가져야 한다는 고정관념을 깨고 언어 그 자체가 어떻게 강력한 조각적 존재가 될 수 있는지를 보여주는 기념비적인 기회였어요. 글래드스톤 갤러리의 벽면을 채운 그의 간결한 문장들은 정해진 정답을 강요하는 대신 관람객 각자의 삶과 경험 속에서 저마다의 새로운 형태와 의미로 다시 태어나게 되는데요. 50년 넘게 이어온 거장의 철학이 담긴 이 특별한 설치 작업들은 복잡한 현대 사회를 살아가는 우리에게 보이지 않는 경계를 넘나드는 자유로운 사유의 시간을 선물해주었어요.
