안녕하세요. 제가 대학 시절 조각을 전공하던 때부터 정말로 좋아하고 동경해왔던 작가, 키키 스미스 전시 다녀왔어요. 학창 시절 과제를 하거나 작품을 구상할 때 그녀의 도록을 보며 수없이 영감을 얻곤 했었는데, 뉴욕에서 그녀의 실물 작품들을 직접 마주하니 감회가 정말 새로웠어요. 키키 스미스는 인간의 신체, 해부학적 구조, 그리고 자연과 동물을 매개로 생명과 죽음의 순환을 그리는 작가에요. 때로는 거칠고 때로는 아주 섬세한 키키스미스의 조각들은 보는 것만으로도 압도적인 에너지를 뿜어내죠. 90년대 뉴욕 미술계의 아이콘이었던 작가가 여전히 왕성하게 활동하며 전시를 한다는게 놀라웠어요.
125 Newbury는 세계적인 메가 갤러리인 페이스 갤러리의 설립자, 아르네 글림처(Arne Glimcher)가 만든 프로젝트 공간이에요. 아르네 글림처가 1960년 보스턴에서 처음 페이스 갤러리를 열었을 때의 주소가 바로 125 Newbury Street 였다고해요. 60년이 지나 거물이 된 그가 초심으로 돌아가서, 자기가 정말 하고 싶은 실험적인 전시를 하기 위해 첫 주소의 이름을 따서 만든 공간이라네요. 그가 직접 운영하면서 훨씬더 개인적이고 실험적인 연구소같은 느낌의 공간이에요. 페이스 갤러리는 엄청나게 큰 상업적 전시를 주로 한다면, 이곳은 수익에 연연하지 않고 아르네 글림처가 개인적으로 좋아하는 작가나 주제를 가지고 연간 5회 정도 아주 밀도 높은 전시를 열고있어요.
I recently visited the exhibition of Kiki Smith, an artist I have truly admired and looked up to since my days as a sculpture major in college. Back then, I used to flip through her catalogs countless times for inspiration while working on assignments or brainstorming my own pieces. Seeing her actual works in person here in New York felt incredibly special and nostalgic.
Kiki Smith is an artist who explores the cycles of life and death through the human body, anatomical structures, and the connection between nature and animals. Her sculptures—sometimes raw and rugged, other times exquisitely delicate—emit an overwhelming energy just by being there. It’s amazing to see an icon of the 1990s New York art scene still practicing so actively and holding such powerful exhibitions today.
The venue, 125 Newbury, is a project space created by Arne Glimcher, the founder of the world-renowned mega-gallery, Pace Gallery. The name comes from "125 Newbury Street," the original address where Glimcher first opened Pace Gallery in Boston back in 1960. Now a titan of the art world 60 years later, he returned to his roots to create this space, naming it after that first address to host the experimental exhibitions he truly wanted to do. Since he manages it personally, the space feels much more intimate and experimental—almost like a personal research lab. While Pace Gallery primarily focuses on large-scale commercial exhibitions, 125 Newbury hosts about five high-density exhibitions a year, focusing on artists or themes Glimcher personally loves, regardless of profit.

125 Newbury is pleased to present Kiki Smith: The Moon Watches the Earth, an exhibition of new and historical works by the renowned American artist Kiki Smith. Curated by Arne Glimcher in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition opens on November 7, 2025 and runs through January 10, 2026.
This presentation, which marks Smith’s first solo show in New York City in six years, debuts a series of new bronzes, drawings, and prints produced in recent years alongside sculptural works created during the late 1980s and early 1990s—including a large-scale installation that has not been exhibited in the U.S. for over 30 years. Together, these works sustain a dialogue across three-and-a-half decades of Smith’s practice—an ongoing conversation between past and present—centering on transience and the fragility and joy of embodiment.

Encountering Kiki Smith’s works at 125 Newbury, with the New York sunlight streaming into the space, was a deeply moving moment—almost like reuniting with an old friend. From the large-scale installation exhibited in the U.S. for the first time in 30 years to her recent, intricate bronze pieces, her unwavering and tenacious spirit of exploration resonated deeply with me as a sculpture major once again. It was a truly happy experience to fully immerse myself in her artistic world, which beautifully portrays the sublime cycles of life and death, all within this experimental space that captures Arne Glimcher’s original vision.
