안녕하세요. 모마에서 있었던 헬렌 프랑켄텔러 다녀왔어요. 

작가는 현대 미술사에서 가장 중요한 여성 화가중 한명이에요. 모마에서 가장 탁트인 공간 로비 공간에서 전시가 있었구요. 스케일이 큰 작품들 전시하기 좋은 공간이라 저도 갈때마다 빼놓지 않고 들르는 공간이에요. 모마가 좀 넓고 전시공간이 여러개라 잊어버리고 못보고 오는 공간들도 많은데, 여긴 바로 2층 로비라서 무조건 가야해요. 전시가 항상 좋기도 하구요. 

헬렌 프랑켄텔러는 수채화 같은 유화, '소크-스테인(Soak-Stain)' 기법의 창시자라고해요. 캔버스에 밑칠을 하지 않고 물감을 묽게 풀어 들이부어, 마치 종이에 물감이 번지듯 캔버스 천 자체에 색이 스며들게 하는 혁신적인 기법을 만들었어요.  또한 추상표현주의의 2세대 리더라고도 불리기도한다네요. 잭슨 폴록 같은 1세대의 거친 느낌을 넘어, 훨씬 부드럽고 서정적인 추상화의 시대를 열었어요. 작가의 작업은 이후 '색면 추상(Color Field Painting)'이라는 장르가 탄생하는 데 결정적인 역할을 했다고해요.

 I recently visited the Helen Frankenthaler exhibition at MoMA.  She is one of the most important female painters in modern art history. The exhibition was held in the lobby area, the most open and spacious part of MoMA. It's a perfect spot for displaying large-scale works, so it's a place I never miss whenever I visit the museum. Since MoMA is quite vast and has so many different galleries, it's easy to overlook some areas, but this space is right in the second-floor lobby, so you absolutely have to go. The exhibitions there are always fantastic.

Helen Frankenthaler is known as the creator of the "Soak-Stain" technique, which produces oil paintings that look like watercolors. She developed this innovative method by pouring thinned-out paint onto raw, unprimed canvas, allowing the colors to soak directly into the fabric as if ink were bleeding into paper. She is also regarded as a leader of the second generation of Abstract Expressionism. Moving beyond the rugged feel of the first generation, such as Jackson Pollock, she opened an era of much softer and more lyrical abstraction. Her work played a decisive role in the birth of the "Color Field Painting" genre.

자신의 회화 작품인 <이사회 의장(Chairman of the Board)>(1971)을 설명하며 헬렌 프랑켄탈러는 이 작업이 "거대한 휩쓸림(a grand sweep)에 관한 것"이었다고 말했습니다. 그녀는 "내 머릿속에는 기본적인 구상이 있었어요. 선들이 어떻게 춤추며 들어올지 알고 있었죠. 스스로에 대한 확신이 있었습니다."라고 덧붙였습니다. 이 문장은 20세기 중반 뉴욕의 추상표현주의 무대에서 돌파구를 마련한 지 20년이 지난 시점에도 여전했던, 대작을 그리려는 작가의 야망과 그 과정에서의 자신감을 잘 보여줍니다. 동시에 '거대한 휩쓸림'이라는 문구는 그녀의 오랜 경력이 보여준 광범위한 궤적과 끊임없는 혁신을 의미하기도 합니다.

이번 전시의 작품들은 프랑켄탈러가 지속해 온 실험들을 간결하게 탐구합니다. 1950년대에 그녀는 묽게 만든 유화 물감을 처리하지 않은 생 캔버스에 붓고, 물감이 지지체(천)에 스며들게 하는 자신만의 독특한 기법을 발전시켰습니다. 1960년대 초에는 아크릴 물감으로 전환하여 더욱 명확한 가장자리를 표현할 수 있게 되었고, 이는 형태를 새롭게 강조하는 계기가 되었습니다. 회화와 풍경 사이의 관계에 주목했던 그녀는 이러한 형태들을 지리적인 관점에서 고찰하며 '구역(districts)' 또는 '영역(territories)'이라고 불렀습니다. 1980년대 후반에 이르러 이러한 재료적 탐구는 점차 정서적 울림이 있는 구성을 만들어냈는데, 최근 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)이 인수하여 처음으로 선보이는 <어둠을 향하여(Toward Dark)>(1988)가 그 대표적인 예입니다.

결국, 이러한 두려움 없는 각각의 발전 과정들이 모여 독보적인 전체를 이룹니다. 프랑켄탈러는 "나는 수년 동안 다양한 방향과 주제를 탐구해 왔습니다."라고 회고했습니다. "하지만 내 모든 그림에서는 단 한 명의 예술가라는 서명, 즉 한 손목이 만들어낸 작업이라는 것을 알 수 있을 것입니다."라고 말이죠.

Describing her painting Chairman of the Board (1971), Helen Frankenthaler said that the work “was about a grand sweep. I had the basic idea in my head—I knew how the lines would dance in. I felt sure of myself.” This statement speaks to the artist’s ambition to paint on a monumental scale, and her confidence in doing so, two decades after her breakthrough moment in the Abstract Expressionist scene of midcentury New York. At the same time, the phrase—a grand sweep—also speaks to the expansive arc of her long career and its continuous innovations.

The paintings in this exhibition offer a succinct exploration of Frankenthaler’s ongoing experiments. In the 1950s, she developed a signature technique of pouring thinned oil paint on raw canvas and allowing the medium to soak into the support. By the early 1960s, she shifted to acrylic paint, enabling more defined edges and precipitating a new emphasis on shape. Attentive to the relationship between painting and landscape, she considered these forms in geographic terms, calling them “districts” or “territories.” By the late 1980s, these material investigations increasingly yielded moodily resonant compositions, like Toward Dark (1988), a recently acquired painting making its MoMA debut.

Ultimately, each fearless development contributes to a distinctive whole. “I’ve explored a variety of directions and themes over the years,” Frankenthaler reflected. “But I think in all my painting you can see the signature of one artist, the work of one wrist.”
