I recently visited the Alice Baber exhibition, a stunning display of Abstract Expressionism at Phillips Auction House. This was my first time visiting Phillips, and I learned they moved to this location just a few years ago. Since they only host a handful of these open-to-the-public exhibitions each year, I felt so lucky that my timing was perfect!

Located right off 5th Avenue, surrounded by luxury boutiques, it’s truly in the heart of Manhattan’s finest area. The building itself is brand new with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, giving it such a trendy and fresh vibe. I especially loved the transparent glass structure that lets you see the entire exhibition from the street—it felt so open, airy, and incredibly spacious.

안녕하세요. 필립스 옥션 하우스에서 있었던 추상표현주의 전시 앨리스 베이버 전시 다녀왔어요. 필립스옥션은 처음 방문한거였는데요, 공간을 새로 이전한지 몇년 되었다고해요. 일년에 이런 오픈형 전시가 몇 건 안열리는 편이라 다행히 기간이 맞아서 다녀올수 있었어요. 명품 매장들이 많은 5번가 옆쪽에 자리하고 있어 맨하탄 최고 위치에 있구요, 건물전체도 통유리창의 새 건물이라 완전 트랜디하고 새로운 느낌이 들더라구요. 밖에서 안쪽 전시를 모두 볼 수 있는 통유리창 구조라 더욱 시원하고 탁 트인 느낌이었어요.

Alice Baber: Sacred Spaces presents a landmark selling exhibition dedicated to one of the most distinctive voices of postwar American abstraction. Spanning more than two decades of the artist’s career, the exhibition brings together nearly thirty works that illuminates Alice Baber’s (1928–1982) evolution from early gestural experimentation to the radiant, immersive compositions of her later years.

Baber’s paintings transform color into structure and sensation. Through layered transparencies and fluid movement, she conceived the canvas as a site of energy and contemplation — what she described as a “sacred space.” Her work moves between Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting while maintaining a deeply personal visual language centered on light, harmony, and emotional presence.

Though represented in major museum collections worldwide, Baber’s achievement has only recently begun to receive sustained scholarly and market recognition. Coinciding with Gail Levin’s authoritative new biography Alice Baber: An Artist’s Triumph Over Tragedy and concurrent institutional presentations, this exhibition marks a pivotal moment in the reassessment of Baber’s legacy, offering a rare opportunity to engage with works spanning the full breadth of her artistic vision.

“Then there is pink—how difficult to control! A great deal of white must be placed in sticky gobs on the palette, odd cadmium red light—still dull—add alizarin—still uninspired. Shall one use rose madder guaranteed to fade by Windsor Newton himself? Or throw it out and use a nice pink acrylic—it shall be found! Pink is light, pink is the shadow of sunset. Made very fine with turpentine and no white; it is the color of India, paladins embroidered in gold. “그리고 여기 핑크색이 있습니다. 얼마나 다루기 힘든 색인지요! 팔레트 위에 끈적한 흰색 물감을 잔뜩 짜놓고, 묘한 카드뮴 레드 라이트를 섞어보아도 여전히 탁합니다. 알리자린을 더해봐도 여전히 영감이 느껴지지 않죠. 윈저 앤 뉴튼(Windsor Newton) 스스로가 변색을 보증하기까지 한 로즈 매더를 써야 할까요? 아니면 다 던져버리고 근사한 핑크색 아크릴 물감을 찾아 써야 할까요—결국 찾아내고야 말겠지만요!
핑크는 빛이며, 노을의 그림자입니다. 화이트 없이 테레핀유로 아주 미세하게 만들어낸 핑크는 황금으로 수놓인 팔라딘(기사들)의 나라, 인도의 색이기도 합니다. 핑크는 그 자체로 온전한 형태와 신체를 지니고 있지만, 나는 이 색이 너무나 자연스럽게 속해 있는 ‘에로틱한 방식’으로 사용하기보다, 오히려 ‘비의적(esoteric)인 것’, 즉 ‘초월적인 전이’의 수단으로 사용하는 것을 선호합니다.”

The exhibition space was absolutely stunning, featuring soaring ceilings and soft, natural light. It felt much more modern and pleasant than most galleries, providing the perfect environment to truly immerse myself in the art. Looking back at the artist’s work now, I find myself appreciating her vision even more. Given that her paintings are already held in major museum collections worldwide, she is definitely an artist to keep a close eye on.

With this visit, I feel like I’ve completed my tour of the major auction houses in New York! I visit Sotheby’s and Christie’s quite often as they host frequent exhibitions, but since Phillips and Bonhams tend to refresh their shows more gradually, my next auction review might take a little more time. 탁트인 천고에 은은한 자연광까지 있는 훌륭한 전시공간이었어요. 왠만한 갤러리들보다 더 현대적이고 쾌적해서 전기 관람하기에 아주 좋은 컨디션이었어요. 작가의 작품들도 지금 다시 정리하면서보니 훨씬 더 좋다고 느껴지기도 하네요. 많은 미술관들에서 소장하고 있는 작가라고하니 앞으로 더욱 주목해서 봐야할 페인팅 인것 같아요. 이걸로 뉴욕에 있는 옥션하우스는 다 돌아본것 같아요. 소더비와 크리스티는 비교적 전시가 자주 있느편이라 자주 가는편이구요, 필립스랑 본햄스는 더 천천히 바뀌는편이라 다음 리뷰는 시간이 좀 더 걸릴것같아요. 그럼 다음 전시로 찾아올게요. 감사합니다.
