ANDREW LORD : Thought in Material : Slected Works 1984-2025
Jan 15 - Feb 21, 2026
Gladstone Gallery, 515 W 24th St, New York, NY 10011
I recently visited the Andrew Lord exhibition at Gladstone Gallery. Andrew Lord is highly renowned as a master who elevated ceramics to the realm of contemporary fine art. While we typically associate ceramics with functional items like bowls or jars, Lord is a sculptor who shapes "light" and "memory" through clay. The exhibition text mentions "tactility," and if you look closely at the works, you can see the artist’s fingerprints and hand marks left behind. That rugged yet delicate texture is his true trademark. The fact that Gladstone, one of New York’s most powerful galleries, is hosting a survey of 40 years of his work signifies that he is a master already proven in art history. Although I visit many exhibitions, seeing a solo show for a ceramic artist at such a major mega-gallery was a first for me. It truly shows how special and important an artist he is. The exhibition was fantastic, and I especially loved how the works seemed to blur the boundaries between sculpture and ceramics.
I’ve captured a video of the exhibition. Please take a look to experience the vivid presence and textures of the works in person.
Gladstone presents its first survey of Andrew Lord’s sculptural works, spanning the artist’s production over the last 40 years. Comprising clay and bronze objects that illuminate the artist’s conceptual approach to ceramics, the exhibition foregrounds the remarkable breadth of Lord’s experimental and experiential oeuvre while revealing the harmony of his vision across decades. Eschewing function and decoration—elements that have historically relegated ceramics to the realm of craft—Lord’s work investigates subjects ranging from the tactility of making to the light in Impressionist painting, from childhood memories of landscapes in his native England, to the atmospheric conditions on Carson Mesa, New Mexico.

Amidst the sleek, polished splendor of contemporary art, Andrew Lord’s work—where the artist’s fingerprints and handprints remain vividly alive—approached me with an even more intense vitality. The process of clay, the most primal material, meeting light and memory to blur the boundaries between sculpture and ceramics, felt as moving as reading an epic poem.
It was a privilege to encounter the tenacity of a master who has focused solely on the tactility of clay for forty long years within the serene space of Gladstone Gallery. I could truly feel the warmth of time shaped by his fingertips. It was an exhibition where the value of sincere "making" shone brighter than any flashy technique. Thank you.
