I recently visited Rob Pruitt’s exhibition in Chelsea. It feels like just last year that I attended his solo show at this same gallery, and here I am already seeing his next one. Time truly flies. Rob Pruitt is an artist who sophisticatedly blends Pop Art sensibilities with Conceptual Art. He is also quite well-known in Korea, having had exhibitions there as well.
While he is widely famous for his "Glitter Pandas," this particular exhibition focused on much more philosophical and calm themes: time and the sky. He is a "sincere observer" who possesses both wit and diligence, often painting the sunrise every morning or capturing the sky with his iPhone. According to the exhibition text, all of these works stem from a profound desire to capture fleeting moments.
Rob Pruitt is represented by 303 Gallery, which is regarded as one of the most tasteful galleries in Chelsea. Located in the heart of the district and established in 1984, it is a prestigious gallery that has produced legendary artists like Doug Aitken and Jenny Holzer. I find myself visiting 303 Gallery often because of its refined curation that never feels overly commercial. It’s always a pleasure to stop by.

303 갤러리(303 Gallery)는 롭 프루이트(Rob Pruitt)의 세 번째 개인전을 개최하게 되어 기쁩니다. 이번 전시는 작가가 지속적으로 탐구해온 '스펙트럼 그라데이션(spectral gradient)'을 바탕으로 한 시간 기반(time-based) 작품들로 구성되었습니다. 작고 세밀한 작업부터 웅장한 규모까지, 회화와 종이 작업들은 찰나의 순간부터 시간, 날, 달, 그리고 년 단위의 흐름을 포착합니다. 특히 이번 전시는 매일 제목이 바뀝니다. 시작은 《스카이스케이프(Skyscapes)》이지만, 이후 매일 프루이트가 즉흥적으로 새로운 제목을 발표할 예정입니다.
프루이트는 2012년부터 다양한 회화 시리즈를 통해 컬러 그라데이션을 활용해 왔습니다. 그의 《자살 회화(Suicide Paintings)》 시리즈에서 그라데이션 프레임 안의 색 면은 문이나 창문을 암시하며 깊은 심리적 공간을 형성합니다. 형상이 배제된 거대한 규모의 이 작품들은 강렬한 에너지를 발산하면서도 명상적인 분위기를 자아냅니다.
최신작인 그라데이션 작업들은 실제 작동하는 시계(Clocks)를 활용합니다. 시계판과 프레임은 특정 시간대의 색상과 일치하도록 채색되었습니다. 일렬로 늘어선 12개의 시계는 동시에 작동하며, 첫 번째 시계는 한밤중의 어둠을 상징합니다. 이후 각 시계는 2시간 간격으로 하루의 변화를 추적하며, 시계 바늘이 자신이 상징하는 시간대에 도달하면 시계판의 색상 속으로 녹아들듯 사라집니다.
또한, 24개의 패널로 구성된 《24시간 회화(24 Hour Paintings)》는 그라데이션을 통해 시간을 색으로 지도화합니다. 작가가 아이폰으로 촬영한 하늘 사진을 바탕으로, 24개의 캔버스는 각각 하루의 한 시간을 나타냅니다. 빛의 움직임을 담아내기 위해 색상은 정교하게 혼합되어 스프레이로 채색되었습니다.
온 카와라(On Kawara)의 '날짜 회화'에 경의를 표하는 새로운 달력 시리즈(Calendar series)에서 프루이트는 아이코닉한 스텐딕 달력(Stendig calendar)을 틀로 삼아 매일 아침의 일출을 수채화로 그려냅니다. 빼곡히 적혀 있던 일정과 메모는 사라지고, 그 빈 공간은 흘러가는 시간을 보여주는 열린 애니메이션이 됩니다.
전시의 모든 작품은 '순간'을 포착하려는 열망을 반영합니다. 매일 전시 제목을 바꾸는 행위 역시 시간을 캡션으로 담아내는 또 다른 방식입니다. 작품들이 추상적이고 열려 있는 만큼, 매일 관점을 바꾸는 이 시도는 작품이 무한히(ad infinitum) 새롭게 갱신될 수 있다는 메시지를 전달합니다.
Skyscapes
303 Gallery is pleased to announce our third solo exhibition of new work by Rob Pruitt. The exhibition is comprised of time-based works from the artist's ongoing investigations of the spectral gradient. Paintings and works on paper, scaled from intimate to grand, capture moments, hours, days, months, and years. Each day of the show will have a different title. It will open as “Skyscapes,” and on each subsequent day, Pruitt will improvise and announce the next title.
Pruitt has utilized gradient fields of color in different, evolving series of paintings since 2012. In Pruitt’s Suicide Paintings, gradient fields within gradient frames suggest doors or windows, forming deep corridors of psychological space. Void of figuration and monumental in scale, the Suicide Paintings radiate intensity and possess a meditative quality.
The latest gradient works employ actual, functioning clocks, with the clock face and frame painted to correspond with a moment in time. A row of 12 clocks run in sync, with the first clock painted to represent the darkness of midnight. Each subsequent clock is painted to track the progression of the day in 2-hour intervals. When the hour strikes for the time of day that the clock represents, the hands of the clock fade away into the colors of the clock face.
With Pruitt's multi-panel 24 Hour Paintings, gradients are used to map time with color. Based on his diaristic iPhone photos of the sky, these paintings are comprised of 24 canvases, each panel representing an hour of the day. The colors are meticulously mixed and spray painted to encapsulate the movement of light.
In a new calendar series indebted to On Kawara’s Date Paintings, Pruitt uses the iconic Massimo Vignelli Stendig calendar as a framework for the natural world, rendering each morning’s sunrise in watercolor.
Gone are the appointments, events and reminders written in each box – instead, the spaces serve as an open ended, animation of passing time.
All of the works in the show reflect the impulse to capture fleeting moments of time. Another way to capture time is to caption it, as Pruitt does with the activity of changing the title of the show daily. As abstract and open to projection as the works are, this suggestion of shifting one’s perspective conveys the notion that the works can be refreshed ad infinitum.
매일 아침의 일출을 수채화로 기록하고, 아이폰으로 포착한 하늘의 색감을 24시간의 캔버스로 옮겨낸 롭 프루이트의 성실함이 깊은 울림을 주는 전시였어요. 우리가 무심코 흘려보내는 매 분, 매 초가 이토록 아름다운 색의 변주였다는 사실을 새삼 깨닫게 되었어요. 303 갤러리의 정갈한 공간 속에서 층층이 쌓인 시간의 층위들을 마주하며, 저 또한 뉴욕에서의 소중한 순간들을 더 정성껏 기록해야겠다는 다짐을 해보았어요. 찰나의 빛을 영원으로 붙잡아둔 작가의 시선 끝에서, 오늘 하루의 소중함을 다시금 느껴본 시간이었어요. 감사합니다.
It was a deeply resonant exhibition that showcased Rob Pruitt’s sincerity—recording each morning’s sunrise in watercolor and translating the hues of the sky captured on his iPhone onto a 24-hour canvas. I was reminded once again that every minute and every second we mindlessly let pass is, in fact, such a beautiful variation of color.
Encountering the layered strata of time within the serene space of 303 Gallery, I felt inspired to document my own precious moments in New York even more thoughtfully. Through the artist’s gaze, which captures fleeting light and holds it for eternity, I had a chance to truly appreciate the value of today. Thank you.
