가고시안Gagosian 은 피카소의 딸 팔로마 피카소 Paloma Picasso와 협력하여 거장의 전 생애(1896~1972)를 아우르는 대규모 전시 <Picasso: Tête-à-tête>를 개최합니다. 이번 전시에서는 피카소의 회화, 조각, 드로잉 등 50여 점의 희귀작이 공개되며, 특히 수십 년 동안 베일에 싸여있던 작품들과 최초로 공개되는 미공개작 12여 점이 포함되어 큰 화제를 모으고 있습니다.

이번 전시는 가고시안의 상징적인 본점인 '980 매디슨 에비뉴' 갤러리에서 열리는 마지막 전시입니다. 래리 가고시안(Larry Gagosian) 회장은 "내 경력 동안 20번 넘는 피카소 전시를 열었지만, 이 유서 깊은 공간의 마지막을 피카소의 블록버스터 전시로 장식하는 것이 가장 적절하다고 생각했다"며 이번 전시의 특별한 의미를 전했습니다.
딸 팔로마 피카소가 직접 기획한 '대화'
피카소의 딸이자 유명 디자이너인 팔로마 피카소가 처음으로 국제적인 주요 전시에 파트너로 참여했습니다. "아버지가 원했던 방식대로, 시대를 넘나들며 작품들이 서로 대화하도록 구성했다"는 그녀의 말처럼, 이번 전시는 연대기 순이 아니라 작품 간의 연결성에 집중합니다.
-테타테(Tête-à-tête): 프랑스어로 '마주보고 하는 대화'라는 뜻입니다. 작품들이 서로 마주 보며 이야기를 나누듯 배치된 것이 특징입니다.

소장 가치 높은 전시 카탈로그
가고시안은 이번 전시를 기념하여 팔로마 피카소와 현대 미술의 거장 피터 도이그(Peter Doig)의 대담이 담긴 도록을 출간합니다. 피카소가 직접 설치했던 1932년 전시 방식에 대한 기록도 포함되어 있어 예술 애호가들에게 귀한 자료가 될 것입니다.

Gagosian is pleased to announce Picasso: Tête-à-tête, presented in partnership with the artist’s daughter Paloma Picasso. Offering a unique opportunity to view over fifty rarely seen paintings, sculptures, and drawings from the full span of the artist’s career—1896 to 1972—the exhibition will include nearly a dozen works that are being exhibited publicly for the very first time and others that have not been shown for decades. Drawn largely from Picasso’s estate, Picasso: Tête-à-tête opens on April 18 and is the final exhibition to be held at Gagosian’s flagship 980 Madison Avenue gallery.
I have been fortunate to present more than twenty exhibitions dedicated to Pablo Picasso throughout my career, and it seems only fitting that a blockbuster show of the artist’s work should close out our time at 980 Madison. It is incredibly exciting to partner with Paloma on her first major international exhibition, and to bring to light so many works that have never been shown before.

Records exist of two exhibitions that Picasso installed himself, the first being his 1932 retrospective at Galeries Georges Petit, Paris. On that occasion, rather than attempting to prove an academic thesis or arrange a strictly chronological presentation, he hung works of different eras and styles together, facilitating a conversation between them. In the same spirit, Picasso: Tête-à-tête juxtaposes paintings, sculptures, and drawings by the protean artist, encouraging viewers to discover new personal connections and continuities. The exhibition will include masterpieces from Picasso’s own collection, alongside works from other prominent sources.
Gagosian is publishing a fully illustrated catalogue of the exhibition featuring a conversation between Paloma Picasso and artist Peter Doig. A translation of a contemporaneous article by Eric Tériade on Picasso’s 1932 Paris installation is also included.
