피카소가 가장 깊게 탐구한 장르, '정물화'
그동안 많은 이들이 파블로 피카소(Pablo Picasso)의 사생활과 연인들에 주목해 왔지만, 정작 그의 예술적 혁신이 가장 강력하게 드러난 분야는 바로 정물화입니다. 피카소의 전기 작가 존 리처드슨은 "정물화는 피카소가 역사상 그 어떤 예술가보다 더 철저하게 탐구하고 상상력 있게 발전시킨 장르"라고 평했습니다. 이번 전시는 그의 경력 전반에 걸쳐 일상적인 사물들을 역동적으로 묘사한 작품들에 집중하는 보기 드문 기회입니다.
피카소 개인 소장품, 최초 공개 작품들
이번 전시에는 피카소가 직접 소장했던 본인의 작품 중 40여 점의 예시가 모였습니다. 특히 대중에게 한 번도 공개된 적 없는 여러 작품이 포함되어 있으며, 1908년부터 1962년 사이의 정물화 제작 과정을 선별적으로 보여줍니다.
입체주의의 탄생: 1908년에서 1914년 사이, 기타, 병, 술잔, 테이블 같은 모티프를 통해 입체주의(Cubism)가 어떻게 탄생하고 진화했는지 보여주는 회화와 드로잉들이 전시의 문을 엽니다.
다양한 양식의 실험: 고전적인 방식과 개념적인 방식을 넘나드는 꽃, 과일, 생선 구성을 통해 피카소 예술 세계의 놀라운 다양성과 실험 정신을 확인할 수 있습니다.

Almine Rech New York is pleased to present 'Pablo Picasso: Still Life,' in collaboration with Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. The exhibition will be on view from May 1 to July 18, 2025, at the gallery’s Upper East Side location. While universal fascination with Pablo Picasso’s personal life and relationships has generated enormous interest in his portrayals of family, friends, and lovers, some of the painter’s most important innovations and powerful statements were made in the area of still life art. According to his biographer John Richardson, “still life is the genre that Picasso would eventually explore more exhaustively and develop more imaginatively than any other artist in history.” 'Picasso: Still Life' is one of the few exhibitions ever organized to focus on his dynamic depiction of everyday objects in various mediums throughout his career.
Over forty examples from Picasso’s private collection of his own work—including several never before seen by the public—are brought together for the first time in a selective survey of his still life production between 1908 and 1962. The exhibition opens with a group of paintings and drawings that demonstrate the crucial role of still life in the birth and evolution of cubism between 1908 and 1914, centered around the motifs that preoccupied Picasso during this period: the guitar, the bottle and drinking glass, and the table. The extraordinary stylistic diversity and experimentation that characterize the artist’s oeuvre overall is demonstrated by flower, fruit, and fish compositions that alternate between classical and conceptual modes of representation.
